I've pretty much given up on using Firefox which is a shame since it is my browser of choice. However, I am trying to run the latest version of Firefox (40.02) on Mac OSX 10.10.5 and it consistently uses massive amounts of cpu even when started in safe mode.

Worse still, it severely impacts my apparent network speed, meaning that is I monitor network speed using speedtest.net my 25Mb link crawls in Firefox with only 4 or 5 MB showing in speedtest and downloads taking forever.

Anything that has Flash causes major issues and I do run a flash blocker, but shockwave flash causes the browser to hang up completely.

If I start up Chrome....Chrome works quite happily at full network speed, (Firefox still only delivering 4 or 5 MB).

Firefox has become completely unusable on my MAC and now I am having to use Chrome in order to get anything done at all.

Not a good state of affairs!

Any suggestions?

Craig

Hi Craigcpcb , I understand that your Mac has a high cpu usage when browsing in Firefox, and that you have tried Safe Mode. I am happy to help. Currently the basic troubleshooting can be referenced here:

I also understand that you are using Shockwave Flash and that this also freezes up the browser. There are some troubleshooting steps that have been recommended in the past that I find helpful:

  1. Changing the plugin to "Always Ask" to Activate from the about:addons page
  2. Disabling hardware acceleration if you do not want to disable it (see directions below)
  3. Disabling protected mode for the player in the about:config options: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/adobe-flash-protected-mode-firefox

Flash accelerations: Some problems with Flash video playback can be resolved by disabling hardware acceleration in your Flash Player settings. (See this article for more information on using the Flash plugin in Firefox).

To disable hardware acceleration in Flash Player:

  1. Go to this Adobe Flash Player Help page.
  2. Right-click on the Flash Player logo on that page.
  3. Click on Settings in the context menu. The Adobe Flash Player Settings screen will open.
  4. Click on the icon at the bottom-left of the Adobe Flash Player Settings window to open the Display panel.

The image "fpSettings1.PNG" does not exist.
  5. Remove the check mark from Enable hardware acceleration.
  6. Click Close to close the Adobe Flash Player Settings Window.
  7. Restart Firefox.

This Flash Player Help - Display Settings page has more information on Flash Player hardware acceleration, if you're interested.

Does this solve the problem? Let us know.

Hi guigs, Thank you for taking the time to respond. I took your advice and disabled Hardware Acceleration, I also changed the flash player options to Always Ask.

This seems to have fixed the problem! I have been running Firefox and Chrome all afternoon and the performance of Firefox has been perfect.

I still have some other things to throw at it but unless I respond again then I think the issue has been resolved and would blame Hardware Acceleration for the problems.

Once again, thanks, it is much appreciated :)
