Re the instructions above, if I click on the exit button, Firefox closes. What do I do next????? Sorry, but this doesn't appear to be able to give instructions to novice users, HELP,

Before I close FF, and, once again lose all my information, please answer me!! This is not easy for a novice. I have been working on this problem for 3 hours now....

I have backed up my profile to a USB stick, AND put a shortcut to it on the desktop. I am running WIN XP PRO V5.12600 SP 3.0 32 bit. on a desktop computer, and no I cannot afford to get a fancy new computer as I am on a fixed pension, (and have a large rent, and no, I cannot move. Any more judgmental issues?)

Sorry to come across as a bit paranoid, but these are the things so called intelligent people do say to me.....sigh....Not doubting yourself in any way, but you would be surprised what some of your volunteers infer in their answers.

I am not stupid, just not as educated as you in the programming & fixing of Computers. Please be patient with me.... Kind regards Sylvia

How was the backup created. For example, did you manually copy the profile folder to the USB flash drive, or did you use a program like MozBackup or FEBE to create the backup?

And is the next step that you want to copy/restore the old profile to your computer and have Firefox use that one instead of the profile you used when posting your question?

jscher...I followed the steps advised in the help advice, then got to this step & didn't know what to do next. So, Yes, I created the folder on my USB memory stick, as per the instructions.... Now, I want to restore it., so I guess Yes is the answer to your 2nd question. Many thanks for your quick response, as I getting a little frustrated, trying very hard to be patient....lol...I AM patient...Yay.. Sylvia

Sorry, I'm not familiar with any procedures that involve a USB flash drive. Are you copying the profile to a different computer than the one you copied it from?

I started here > Videos, sound, pictures and animations don't work > Fix problems that cause images to not show >Try refreshing Firefox. >Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings >Refresh Firefox >clicked on the 1st 'refresh FF' button & followed the steps, and ended up where I stated in my original question. (don't want to do all the steps again, lol, one refresh per year is all I can stand!) this step was >

    "Restoring a profile backup"

Now, I cannot find that Q without going through the steps again, so if you can find the help heading "Restoring a profile backup" then you will see where I got to & why it said to create a file on a USB stick....I mean, come on, did you really expect me to know WHY they asked me to do that??? So, what info would you like next? I really cannot think of any other I can give you....oh, yes, when FF re-opened after the 'refresh' I found I could upload images once again, I tried it on FB.... So that's it....Now the original Q, how do I restore the profile back onto FF, (not sure about that terminology, sorry)... I just know that I was following instructions & got to that point & did not know what to do next 'cos someone forgot to insert the steps! (steps for a novice, that is) sigh...... I do hope you can help me, as another 90 minutes just went by! and my neck is starting to hurt...(eye roll...lo...) Trying to keep my sense of humour intact.... Kind regards Sylvia

I guess it's this section: https://support.mozilla.org/kb/fix-problems-images-not-show#w_images-still-do-not-load-correctly

There is a reference to backing up your Firefox profile in this article: https://support.mozilla.org/kb/back-and-restore-information-firefox-profiles#w_backing-up-your-profile

However, when did you do the backup? If it was from a time when everything was working nicely, then let's figure out what to salvage from the backup. However, if it was made in the midst of having this problem, then I think it probably won't be helpful and instead we should discuss the reason you started down this road in the first place.

What's the problem you are currently having with video, sound, images, etc.?

Oh wait, upon second reading: image uploading was broken, and it works now. But you want to recovery some information that was lost in the Refresh? Is that the situation?

more options

Yes, you got it! If you follow the path of refresh, FF makes a copy of certain things, bookmarks etc....and it's now on both my desktop AND the memory stick....to restore my bookmarks etc, I need to know HOW (or WHAT) to do step by step to restore these things, as I now have no bookmarks! & etc....Not to mention that after I restore these I then have to remember which add-ons I had, I can remember most, but..... Also I need to configure the whole FF look to what I like, I did this last year, OMG, such a lot of work to fix one little problem....I have had this problem (images not uploading) for almost 3 weeks now, & I have spent a lot of time posting my problem in various forums to find an answer/fix....when Ask Leo! (the only sane answer I got) wrote & said he would uninstall & re-install FF, well, I just then attempted to ask the question on FF....so you can see how frustrated I am now...a whole day I've been working on this....not to mention the time you have spent getting the big picture from me....lol...my emails have been banking up, oh my....ah well, at least it's fixed.... Now, do you know how I can restore these saved things back onto FF? Please? Sylvia x

Long day away from the computer...

Check inside "Old Firefox Data" folder for a folder with a semi-randomized name. If there's only one, that probably has your old settings and add-ons. If there's more than one, you'll want to work with the one that was updated most recently.

Once you have identified the profile folder you want to restore, here is my suggested "old profile resurrection procedure":

Overview

These are the steps described in more details below:

  1. Create a new Firefox profile
  2. Remove everything from that new profile folder
  3. Copy in everything from the old profile folder

Create a new Firefox profile (Windows)

Exit Firefox and start up in the Profile Manager by pasting the following into the Start menu search box, or the Start > Run dialog, and pressing Enter:

firefox.exe -P

Note: Any time you want to switch profiles, exit Firefox and return to this dialog.

Click the Create Profile button, assign a name like OldSettings, and skip the option to change the folder location. Then select that new profile in the dialog and start Firefox.

Open the New Profile folder in Windows Explorer

Firefox in the new profile should look like a factory fresh installation. Open the Troubleshooting Information page using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Troubleshooting Information
  • Help menu > Troubleshooting Information
  • type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter

In the first table, click the "Show Folder" button. Firefox will launch your brand new profile folder in Windows Explorer.

Leaving that folder open, switch back to Firefox, and Exit. When Firefox closes, the profile folder should be front and center, or you can activate it using the Task bar.

Copy Old Data in Place of New

In that new profile folder, select all the contents and delete.

Leaving that window open, open or switch over to your Old Firefox Data folder. Drill down into your old profile folder. At this level you should see a folder named bookmarkbackups among other things.

Select everything (Ctrl+a) and Copy (either right-click > Copy or Ctrl+c).

Switch to the empty new profile folder in other window and Paste (either right-click > Paste or Ctrl+v). This may take a minute since some of the files are large.

Start Firefox

Firefox should start up in that new profile with the resurrected old profile data. Success?

Now... that may also get you back to the earlier image uploading problems, so you'll have to come back to us on that.

Thank you very much for being so patient with me....I have been nursing a very sore back for 3 weeks now, it flared up again on Sunday....sitting in the chair at the computer stressing out hasn't helped much.... I appreciate all your help.....I am delaying restoring the old FF data, (BTW, I created it manually, and I deleted the original Old FF Data file before I started) as I have so much work/emails backing up, and FF seems to be working ok, & I have mt bookmarks back, Session Manager & some of my important add-ons, the only thing I would add that might help someone else intending to do a FF Refresh, is write a list of all your add-ons (extensions) before you start, as they will all disappear....it's a bit of a nightmare trying to remember what very useful add-ons you already had! And, restoring FF appearance is also not that easy, either....some things haven't restored exactly the same....you can guess I don't like change much...lol...I reckon, if it's not broke don't fix it! Very grateful for your time & help, & I apologise if I was a bit tetchy.... Kind regards Sylvia ...Peace & Love
