The web is full of lures to get you to install bad software or to reveal your login credentials. There's just no getting around the fact that you can see ads for these sites in any browser you use, and you need to be very suspicious of claims that you need a new video update or that you need to confirm your account on some unfamiliar web address, etc.

While there is no way to bulletproof any browser, you can reduce distracting and potentially misleading ads by using Adblock Plus, a popular add-on which filters out some ads. Some sites will not work correctly when you blocks ads; you get to decide how to respond to that situation (i.e., view the ads or skip the site).

You also can subscribe to services that block malware distribution and phishing sites, which supplement the information Firefox gets from the SafeBrowsing project. For example:

And if you see a pop-up about updating Firefox and you're not sure you can trust it, you can cancel it and use the Help menu to check for updates. Either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > About Firefox
  • (menu bar) Help > About Firefox

(If you prefer a classic menu bar, tap the Alt key to show it temporarily. To turn it on permanently, tap Alt, then View > Toolbars > Menu Bar)
