Thunderbird worked until yesterday when I received an error message 'There is not enough disk space to download new messages' I deleted/moved to local folders a number of emails from my inbox and, as advised, compacted and set it up to compact automatically. It continued to work for the rest of the day but when I opened it this morning it did not download my emails automatically as usual. I clicked the 'get mail' button but to no avail. I know that I have messages on the server because I have looked on my webmail and they have been received at my Apple mail account and my iPhone I run Mac OS X 10.9.5 and Thunderbird 31.5.0 I have a POP 3 nildram (now TT) account. I hope that this is sufficient information to enable me to resolve the issue and resurrect my Thunderbird account but, as you can see from the tone of this message, I am not terribly computerate.

How much free disk space have you got?

more options

Right click on the account and then click on "setting" and go to "synchronization & storage". In "Disk Space" choose "Synchronize all messages ...".

more options

Thank you for that but I cannot find "synchronization & storage" in my account settings. Is that because my account is POP 3?

more options

Yes it is because your account is POP. Are you running anti virus software? It is often out of step with reality.

more options

Thank you. No, I am not running any anti virus software.

Can anyone please help to solve my problem? I have not been able to use Thunderbird since 4/3/15.

The lack of response is really very disappointing! Can no one assist?

stating at the beginning, have you turned off your computer, and disconnected it from the power/battery?

The report that your have insufficient disk space indicated that some software at least can find none free to use. You do not say if subsequent attempt to get mail prompt with the same message. Do they or have we moved onto something new.

Reasons for disk space appearing to be insufficient and usually down to security software, but streaming backups can also make disk space unavailable because the relevant file can not be opened, it is being backed up. Time machine used to be notorious for backing up file while in use.

Sorry have done as you suggest but without any successful outcome

Having had no solution to my problem I would like to know if I can start afresh with a new copy of Thunderbird. I appreciate that there would be an unbridgeable gap between the two but I would really like to use TBird again notwithstanding the failure of support to successfully answer my question!

Another disappointing lack of response! Can anyone help please?

Could you try using IMAP?

Please do the following and report back on results.

Move all emails out of inbox folder into suitable folders for organising. Delete any you do not want.

Right click on 'Junk' folder and select 'Empty Junk Right click on Junk folder and select 'Compact'

Do the same with the 'Deleted' folder.

When Inbox is empty: Right click on Inbox and select 'Compact'.

Now test getting mail, do you still get the error message when using a completely empty Inbox?

Thank you. I only have a trash folder but followed your instructions but with no new emails into an empty inbox

My email account is POP3 not IMAC

Please confirm you have these settings:

'Tools' > 'Account Settings' > 'Server Settings' for the pop mail account Select : 'check for new messages at startup' Select: 'check for new messages every 10 minutes' select: 'Automatically download new messages'

If you need messages left on server: Select: 'Leave messages on server' Click on 'OK'

When you startup TB or click on 'Get Messages' What happens now that the Inbox is completely empty? I know you said no new mails were downloaded, but what else? What does it say in the bottom status bar eg: Looking up, connecting, Connected etc? Do you get still get any error messages, if yes, what are they ...word for word?

Please post this info: In Thunderbird Help > Troubleshooting Information click on 'copy text to clipboard' paste info into this question in forum.

Thank you once again. Settings are confirmed. Inbox still empty but status bar says 'Home account: connected to nildram.co.uk' There are no error messages just a blank inbox when I fetch mail.

I downloaded 38.0.01 Sunday. TB hasn't worked since. I tried performing the suggestions you gave the OP, nothing has worked. I still have no email. As far as the 'message at the bottom', all it says is...Connecting to mail.comcast.net. It never connects, the green bar at the bottom no longer exists. I done an uninstall of the first updated version. I then downloaded a 'fresh' version from Mozilla. Nothing.

raven818: You seem to have a completely different issue as in your case you are not connecting so you cannot be getting all the same errors. I would check your antivirus/firewall settings. close Thunderbird and check those settings. Thunderbird must be set to 'Allow'. If you still have issue, please start your own question.

Derbyshire re; 'Home account: connected to nildram.co.uk' You are connecting - that's good, but I presume you do not get the 'downloading x messages' in bottom status bar, which would be the next phase..

Now that your Inbox is empty and compacted, have you stopped getting the 'There is not enough disk space' message? Please confirm this.

This connecting, but not downloading might indicate a log jam caused by one or more email(s) on server which for some reason cannot download and therefore is blocking others. Please you log on to webmail account using a browser. Empty the Spam folder. In Inbox: Move the oldest mail that has not downloaded into another folder. In thunderbird, click on 'Get messages'
