Outlook Calendar and Contact Sync – When Will It Be Available?

Hello Thunderbird community,

I’ve been exploring Thunderbird’s integration options and noticed that while email sync with Outlook accounts works fine, calendar and contact synchronization with Outlook/Exchange Online is currently unavailable.

This is a significant limitation for users who rely on Outlook’s ecosystem for scheduling and address book management. I’d like to ask:

Is there an official roadmap for when Outlook calendar sync will be supported in Thunderbird?

Will Outlook contacts sync be added at the same time, or as a separate feature?

I believe many users would benefit from clarity on this, since full Outlook integration is critical for those working in Microsoft-centric environments.

Thanks in advance to the Thunderbird team and volunteers for any updates or guidance.

I have 21 filters set up in Thunderbird (originally on the Mac, now on Windows). This is for an IMAP account.

Most of the filters are simple, one match, mark message as read, move to a folder. A few have multiple matches, but the same mark read and move to folder steps.

Some filters work fine, some do not work at all. The ones that are not working are the simple single match ones. There's nothing in the filter log showing what the issue might be. The filter in question doesn't show up.

What can I do to track down what the issue might be?

Thanks.

Hi I completed a search of a folder and saved the results to a separate Search folder. After I "investigated" the listed messages, I wished to delete the "Search" folder. I was suspicious so compared the list in the Search folder with the Original. Found that the messages in the Search folder were now missing from the Original folder. So went back to Search folder and copied each message to the Original folder. As a check, I then recorded the details of six messages in the Original folder and deleted them from the Search folder. I found they were also deleted from the Original folder. Bummer! Edit\Undo Delete. Didn't work. Have apparently now lost the record of those six messages. Two questions: 1 Can those six messages be recovered? 2 Can the Search folder and the copies of the messages in it be deleted without loosing them from the Original folder? Thank you Graham

Background- We’ve been using Thunderbird on a Windows machine for around 15 years (Win 11 for the last 3-4 years). Me and my wife use the same app. We each have an IMAP account for online mail. Also we each have a separate POP3 local folder for our older ‘saved’ emails. Thunderbird is just pointed towards one POP3 local folder at a time. So our accounts are: IMAP mail address A, IMAP mail address B, Pop3 account A or B.

If I want to look at my ‘saved’ emails I just swap Thunderbird account settings so it points towards my local POP3 folder. Normally Thunderbird local folders are directed to my wife’s POP3 folder. Windows explorer says her local folder contains 1,875 Files and 256 subfolders. It uses around 19 Gb of disk space, and the largest subfolder is almost 4GB (it’s a *.sbd folder). She likes to keep all her old emails!.

The problem is:

In recent years Thunderbird seems to automatically create copies of a subfolder that she created called ‘Gen’. (short for 'General'). See image.

These auto-created subfolders are called Gen1, Gen2, Gen 3 etc. They go up to Gen 6.

Some of the emails in these auto-created folders appear to have subject headings that she recognises, but they might have no content or junk content. More often the mails appear to be exact duplicates of other mails, but they are probably not exact duplicates. The ‘remove duplicates’ add-on does not recognise them as duplicates, so we are left with many copies of mails that look exactly the same to us, but are subtly different.

We have tried to delete the unwanted additional emails from these ‘gen’ subfolders, but this generally doesn’t work. Sometimes it just appears to result in another ‘gen’ subfolder being created. It's a bit like 'Whack a mole'!

We have a suspicion that the ‘Compacting’ process may sometimes result in more ‘gen’ subfolders being created.

My wife has many other subfolders in her POP3 directory but they mostly work fine. It’s mainly the ‘Gen’ subfolder that creates problems, though 1-2 other subfolders hint at a similar issue.

When I switch the Thunderbird local folders to look at my POP3 folder I have no problems at all. My POP3 folder is much smaller than my wife’s. (3 Gbyte, 1,297 Files, 174 Folders)

We’re running Thunderbird 128.6.0esr (64-bit), but the problem occurred with previous versions of the programme (over a period of several years). We only have two add-ons. ‘Remove Duplicates’ and ‘import export tools NG'.

Can anyone suggest how we stop the auto-creation of these subfolders? Many thanks in anticipation!

Bug: From what I understand, this issue is known.

Question: Does anyone have any idea what time horizon it will take to use Exchange with Thunderbird?

I have an issue with folder hierarchy on all my accounts within my own web server, as shown in image #1 (_ACTUAL.png).

I have checked with the SyOps of my server and they have assured me that there is no special settings or hierarchy of the folder structure, which is corroborated by image #2 (_WEBMAIL.png).

How can I correct this because, because as it stands, it just doesn't make sense; how can you have your Sent messages in your INBOX?

I have unsubscribed and resubscribed (I'm using IMAP BTW) to the folders and the folder list for subscription is incorrect too (see image #3, _SUBSCRIBE.png).

Has anyone had a similar issue and, if so, were you able to fix it?

If any of the TB Guru's out there have any insights into this, please feel free to share.

Thanks, as always.

Since the last update to version 146.00, under the folder Archives, both the sub folders for 2024 and 2025 have changed to Drafts and I cannot change them back to show the year folder (2024 & 2025). None of my other yearly Archived sub-folders are affected from 2016 - 2023.

Under Properties, both show their respective year correctly - i.e. imap://xxxxxx1%40sky.com@imap.mail.yahoo.com/Archive/2024 and; imap://xxxxxx1%40sky.com@imap.mail.yahoo.com/Archive/2025

I attach screenshots showing the issue and any help would be appreciated.

In essence, after trying various ways of trying to sort the above out, it would be helpfull Mozilla if under the Folder Properties box, I could just change the name back from Drafts to the appropriate year. However, in the folder box when selecting the Name line, it won't allow you to alter the folder name. This would seem the simple solution to any alteration of Folders by being allowed to rename them back to the original name.

I had two emails on my Thunderbird. I deleted one by mistake. The G Mail account still works. I tried to reenter my Spectrum Account and I keep getting that my configuration user name or password are wrong. I checked all settings and they appear to be correct. I also deleted the account and tried reinstalling it and got the same result. I also tried to enter a new email account that I just got. I had the same result. Keeps asking me to reenter the password. (would be helpful if it would say why it is wrong (password, setting, etc.) I spent hours on this today. I worked with the Spectrum agent and we couldn't fix it. Bur it seems to be a general problem because I get the same result with both accounts.

I have several folders defined under 'Local Folders'. Two ('Mark_emails' and 'Mums_emails') have been renamed as 'Sent'..... so I now have 3 'Sent' folders! Looking at the properties of one of these, shows:

       Name: Sent
       Location: mailbox://nobody@LocalFolders/Mark_emails

I can't change the name back to 'Mark_emails'. I've tried Repair, to no avail. I can't delete it either.

It's a similar situation with 'Mums_emails'

I want to keep the emails that these folders contain.

I'm using Thunderbird 146.0 (64-bit) on Windows 11.

It seems as thought the Thunderbird "Archive" folder is actually reflecting my Gmail "All Mail" folder (which includes mail w/o regard to labels). However, is the Archive folder duplicating these emails on my PC, i.e. is there a copy of each Inbox email, etc? This would double the size it takes up on my PC. Or is it simply acting like the "All Mail" folder online - reflecting all emails.

I was cleaning up my Inbox when I looked at the "Important" folder. I read in a number of places that this is a "Gmail" thing, and messages get in this folder apart from any action etc on my part.

I have a couple questions.

FIRST, are the emails in the "Important" folder only in that folder or are copies in there? I deleted a number of 2 to 3 year old emails that I do not consider important today. The closer I get to this year [2025], the more careful I get.

SECOND, how can the auto-population of that folder be stopped and the folder be deleted? I keep my important emails in designated folders so I can find them.

Thanks in advance
