how can I get access to bookmarks with my own code?

I was writing some backup scripts ( bash on cygwin) and was curious how I get access to firefox information like history or more importantly bookmarks in a way that I can easily automate the backup process. Apparently these are in a db somewhere and I can just make my own sql query if nothing else but thought there may be easier way. Are there any command line utilities that come with Firefox or can I invoked it from the command line with parameters to do stuff like this? I'd hate to have to go through the error prone manual process of clicking a bunch of export menu's to make this happen I was just through that with some commercial products that shall remain nameless. Thanks.
