It turned out that the PCM slider in Kmix was all the way down by default after installation. That is a bad default. Also the documentation for Kmix doesn't adequately explain what the PCM control is. In fact I searched the Internet for 15 minutes and I still don't even know what "P" or "C" or "M" stands for.
