How to get Gmail configuration to work.

The standard SMTP server for Gmail accounts does not seem to work. For it to work, set it to STARTTLS in Connection Security instead of SSL/TLS. Why do I have to fix it manually? And why is it not stated anywhere on Mozilla support at Google Answers?

The gmail smtp server settings are as follows and they work perfectly for an imap gmail account using Authentication Method: OAuth2 I know because not only have I been using one set up for a few years in version 102.15.1 But I've also just - and I mean about 10 minutes ago - added an imap gmail account in beta 119.0b6

SMTP outgoing

  • Server name: smtp.gmail.com
  • Port: 465
  • Connection SEcurity: SSL/TLS
  • Authentication Method: OAuth2
  • User Name: full email address

Gmail imap account is now very easy to set up and that includes connecting to gmail calendar.

But you did not mention what type of account you use, settings etc Is it a Pop or IMAP mail account ? Do you use Authentication Method: 'OAuth2' or 'Normal Password' for both incoming and outgoing? Have you set up to use 2FA and therefore use an app specific password ? In which case, you have to alter things from the default settings - eg: Authentication Method: has to be 'Normal Password' but you actually enter the app specific password.

If using the default settings Authentication Method:OAuth2 then you would have to disable that 2FA and not use any app specific password. Enter normal password at gmail prompt so a token gets created, stored and used by Thunderbird from then onwards.

Oauth2 is set up for incoming and outgoing at the same time, so if eg: outgoing had a problem then you would need to remove all passwords, restart Thunderbird to force a login to google which then means you can allow Thunderbird access to account.

In addition - set up your Firewall to allow Thunderbird program so no ports get blocked.

I was using the standard settings for Gmail configuration - but could not get it to work. I finally found a solution - that was to change Connection Security to STARTTLS instead of SSL/TTS (which was the standard) This happend on multiple of my google accounts - using different OS'es (Fedora & Windows). One is without 2FA, one is with 2FA enabled - no app specific password used with the one with 2FA enabled.

I don't know why SSL/TTS isn't working, but it's working now with STARTTS.

Now I'm wondering why STARTTS works but SSL/TTS don't :)
