How to show Display name rather than the full email address?

Hello. I have recently imported contacts from Windows Live Mail to Thunderbird. It appears this has completed but, when I write a new email, I must use the contacts full email address. I have checked the contacts and First, Last and Display name is filled out correctly, but continues to use the full email address. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
