Preferences changing by themselves?

It appears that 2 preferences are regularly changing by themselves on a family member's WIndows 10 laptop.

1. The "mailto" option disappears from Applications. We fix it a Firefox Refresh which restores it...until it disappears again within days or weeks.

2. The "Always ask where to save files" unchecks in Downloads. We check it, and it works fine...until it becomes unchecked again within weeks.

What do we need to look for in order to avoid this?
