firefox 55.0.3 - address bar does not work

Typing any web address (amazon.com, etc.) leads to the "Problem loading page" page. Searching (without the .com) still works.

I've tried starting with add-ons disabled: no fix. I've tried changing the places.sqlite file to places.sqlite.broke1: no fix.

Help?
