as recommended, ran "refresh" mozilla. Now can't find boomarks and folder appear to be empty. Where are my bookmarks and how do I find them?

I ran Refresh Mozilla as recommended. Read articles on how to restore bookmarks from automated (dated) backup. However, the two folders that appear at the address cited were empty. How do I restore my bookmarks? (I am not very knowledgeable on these things, so please explain in simple terms and steps. Thank you!)

Chosen solution

The Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings article cites that "Your old Firefox profile will be placed on your desktop in a folder named "Old Firefox Data". There should be a file called places.sqlite in that folder - isn’t it available?

If it is, copy that file to your new profile folder, but after closing Firefox. Make sure to copy it to the proper (new) profile folder that you should be able to find by opening about:profiles - it will say "This is the profile in use and it cannot be deleted."

If this didn’t help, what 2 folders were you referring to?

You can check if you have orphaned profiles that aren't registered in profiles.ini and that do not show in the Firefox Profile Manager. You can check that by opening the current profile folder and go up one level.

Firefox uses two locations for the Firefox profile folder, so make sure to look in the correct location. Location used for the main profile in "AppData\Roaming" that keeps your personal data.

  • C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\

Location used for the disk cache and other temporary files in "AppData\Local".

  • C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\

You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.

Thank you for your responses. Subsequent to posting my questions, a Mozilla pop-up "Well, this is embarrassing..." appeared regarding my bookmarks and toolbars. I checked my desktop link again and the old data folders were populated with files this time (previously, there were no files). I followed your recommendation and the bookmarks were available when I opened the browser. However, the last backup was dated from mid-December, but this is better than no bookmarks!

Thank you.
