Can Firefox (through plugins or scripts) made to behave like Chrome when typing URLs namely that it not only offers the full URL but also offers to search the website using the websites own search field when pressing TAB.

To make it more clear what Chrome does, a step-by-step: #1 User types eg. "wik". #2 The browser infers the complete URL (wikipedia.org) and displays it as a possible completion. #3 User presses TAB to complete the URL and can now type a search term. #4 After he has typed his search term and pressed ENTER his search query is forwarded to the wikipedia internal search function (as a URL parameter). #5 The user is shown wikipedias search result page for his search query.

The specific difference between Firefox and Chrome is that in Firefox one has to type the keyword completely whereas in Chrome one can just type the first part of the keyword and then press TAB. To me that provides more ease of use since I can use the URL (eg. wikipedia.org - something that I know already) as the keyword and use TAB to autocomplete and search instead of remembering the exact keyword (something that I need to learn).

I found the question posed but not answered in these places: #1: https://www.reddit.com/r/firefox/comments/1p4897/how_to_press_tab_in_address_bar_to_search_in_that/ #2: http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=2355149
