I am unable to get Firefox to run after upgrading to Firefox 40.0 from 39.0.3; I have this same issue with the 40.0.2 and the 40.0.3 releases. Reverting back to 39.0.3 and everything is working/normal.
With 40.0.x releases, I receive no error message(s) and am never prompted with the Profile Manager; however, the firefox.exe process is running with nothing unusual (i.e., normal CPU, Memory, Disk Usage, etc.). When attempting to run in Safe Mode, I am never prompted with "Safe Mode" window (Safe Mode / Refresh options).
I have tried a clean install (after uninstalling any existing version), and even though I don't believe firefox is getting far enough to load a profile, I have deleted all profiles... a new default profile is never created. While not too familiar with all the various/available firefox log files, I have browsed through them and see no errors or nothing unusual.
I am on Windows 7 with a decently powered/configured machine, and believe I am familiar with firefox... I have used it for my browser since V2.0 and have always been able to identify/fix any issues or quirks in the past.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Was running an earlier version of Firefox desktop (I don't know which one---some version in the twenties), when I experienced a freezeup on my PC.
I shut down the PC with all the tabs still open (they closed automatically before shutdown) and restarted the PC.
When my desktop loaded after restart, my Firefox icon in the taskbar had disappeared. (No familiar Firefox prompt asking if I wanted to re-open unexpectedly closed tabs---no icon even!) So I opened 'all programs', found the Firefox program, and put the icon back in the taskbar.
When I clicked on the restored Firefox icon, (remember, I downloaded nothing new---I only created / restored my icon in the taskbar on the desktop from the *existing* firefox program in 'All Programs') a whole new version of firefox came up berfore my disbelieving eyes! It's version 39.0.3.
Questions: 1. Where the **** did this nasty, cursed, unwelcome new version come from that's now sulking on my computer with, among other anti-features, its stupid G.U.I.? (I HAAAAATE IT!!!!!)
2. How can I get my previous version back, with all its [better] features and appearance? (What---this new version doesn't even let me make the Extensions icons smaller to save space, or let me put separator lines in between them? Really?!?)
3. How did this 'hijack update' happen, since I always have Firefox updates set to ask me first before installing, and I haven't ever installed this new version (or it would have already been the one I was using)?
Thank you for listening to my rant and for any useful information / insights you might have.
