TB has stopped downloading my emails from AT&T

I have used ThunderBird and FireFox for years, but recently I was offline for a few weeks due to a car accident and hospital stay. Now, I have about 500 incoming emails which are marked unread at POP.ATT.YAHOO.COM I can see them when I use the browser to go to mail.yahoo.com. Thunderbird 45.2.0 is stuck with the last message from July 9th, 2016 and will not download any of the ones out there on the ATT/Yahoo server.

The only other odd behavior I can report is that Windows Update (which was still working on July 1) now says "you are up to date" (which was not true even on July 1, because I have never allowed blind auto-updates from MS). When I click on Check for Updates, it just hangs forever.

I have Win 7 Pro on a Thinkpad, TB 45.2.0, FF 47.0.1

I am just not sure how to proceed. Of course I could just use my browser to access the emails, but I have a whole system of TB sub folders and a system of working with TB that was just fine for me.

Any pointers on how to troubleshoot this will be very much appreciated. Thank you.

What happens when you attempt to retrieve mail? Any error message?

No error messages at all. Two observations: For a moment, the lower left corner said

"Downloading message 1 of 517" but that disappeared

without downloading anything. Now, when I click on Get Messages, I see it saying "sending login information" and then nothing. I am wondering if there is a timeout parameter somewhere that should be adjusted. AT this time, I am in a rural area where the internet is limited to 1.5 megabits per second because it is a shortwave radio connection (!). I have successfully received email here before.

have you rebooted the device? IF not do so at once.

Second. It sounds like your anti virus might be on the blink. Hence the reboot to shock it to life. Otherwise it sounds like it has a firewall component that is simply broken. Or an email scanning component.
