Aside from the ongoing Flash nonsense, why is this browser constantly NOT RESPONDING?

more options

I'm beyond the daily and relentless crashing of the Adobe Flash which no one seems to wish to correct, but now I can't use the Firefox browser without constantly hanging and freezing and not responding, which affects all other programs I might have open. Firefox has always been my favorite browser BUT if this situation is going to continue without abatement, I'll sacrifice all of my bookmarks and switch over to Google Chrome. I can only take so much of this and I[m drawing dangerously close to the limit of my patience.

Sorry to hear that you are frustrated with Firefox, Steve.

Perhaps you have an addon installed on Firefox which is using a lot of memory? Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Firefox Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode that temporarily turns off hardware acceleration, resets some settings, and disables add-ons (extensions and themes).

If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu:

  • Click the menu button New Fx Menu, click Help Help-29 and select Restart with Add-ons Disabled.

If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:

  • On Windows: Hold the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
  • On Mac: Hold the option key while starting Firefox.
  • On Linux: Quit Firefox, go to your Terminal and run firefox -safe-mode
(you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)

When the Firefox Safe Mode window appears, select "Start in Safe Mode".

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, theme, or hardware acceleration. Please follow the steps in the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article to find the cause.

To exit Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.

When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help others with the same problem.

Just so you know, Chrome can import your Firefox bookmarks, that isn't something that will hold you back.

What have you tried to far to address your Flash and freezing issues? If you haven't already tested with Flash's protected mode feature disabled, you should try it. That feature has security benefits, but seems to have serious compatibility issues on some systems. You can disable it using the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Plugins. On the right side, find "Shockwave Flash" and click the More link. Then uncheck the box for "Enable Adobe Flash protected mode" and try that for a day to see whether it helps.

Note: All Flash media must be unloaded from all Firefox tabs for at least 3 minutes before the switch actually occurs, or you can exit Firefox and start it up again.

Thanks Jscher2000, but it was already unchecked, so the answer lies elsewhere.

Did you try the Firefox SafeMode as Wesley posted?

I hope there's an answer in here somewhere!

Thank you for the crash IDs. I'm not skilled enough at reading them to determine what Flash was trying to do when it stopped working.

Do you recall whether this was a video player or Flash application that you were intentionally using? If there are problems with background use of Flash, you could minimize those issues by setting Flash to Click-to-Play ("Ask to Activate"). This will block Flash from starting on a page until you approve it.

To set "Ask to Activate", open the Add-ons page using either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Plugins. Look for "Shockwave Flash" and change "Always Activate" to "Ask to Activate".

With this setting, when you visit a site that wants to use Flash, you should see a notification icon in the address bar and usually (but not always) one of the following: a link in a black rectangle in the page or an infobar sliding down between the toolbar area and the page.

The plugin notification icon in the address bar typically looks like a small, dark gray Lego block. When the page wants to use a blocked plugin, the icon turns red to alert you to the concern.

If you see a good reason to use Flash, and the site looks trustworthy, you can go ahead and click the notification icon in the address bar to allow Flash. You can trust the site for the time being or permanently.

But some pages use Flash only for tracking or playing ads, so if you don't see an immediate need for Flash, feel free to ignore the notification! It will just sit there in case you want to use it later.

Not a solution, but hopefully will avoid Flash issues on sites where Flash isn't really necessary.
