Hello,

I haven't been on my PC in a while and today i finally booted my PC and started updating my software, which includes Firefox. I checked if things worked before the update and it did, but now many websites display this weird symbol:

http://i.imgur.com/aCckIFw.png

I have tried deleting my Firefox and using a clean profile (no saved info at all, not even passwords etc) with absolutely no add-ons or extensions, but it persists. I have checked my content settings and I have it set to allow sites to use their own fonts. I rebooted the browser and then tried turning if off, rebooting and then turning it back on but that didn't work either.

Some sites with the problem: Outlook, yahoo, forums, imgur,

The issue also happened on my Ubuntu drive as soon as I updated Firefox.

Is the setting in Options/Preferences also correct? It is possible that security software is blocking the remote fonts. What security software do you have? You can check the log in the Web Console for error messages and the Network Monitor (Firefox/Tools > Web Developer) to see if content fails to load or is possibly blocked. Use Ctrl+F5 or Ctrl+Shift+R to reload the page and bypass the cache to generate a fresh log.

Hello and thank you once again,

The option is checked to Allow. I am sure. I checked for errors and got some for some sites and nothing for other sites. I didn't know what to make of it but since it was still happening for new profiles I uninstalled Firefox, rebooted, reinstalled and then found out that fresh profiles worked but not my old one with my data.

I went through my profile folder deleting files at the root directory one by one and then opening the browser each time. I finally came to deleting the prefs files (prefs.js & its backup), reopened the browser and it regenerated the files and now the issues are gone.

Did it get corrupted? If so, what could corrupt the prefs files so that I may avoid it from now on?

Special icons are usually supplied by a font that is downloaded from the server (@font-face) as you might see by little boxes that show the hex code of the characters instead. If you have a font installed that covers this Unicode range then you may see a real character and not the little box with the CSS code.

You can check the gfx.downloadable_fonts.enabled pref on the about:config page and make sure that it is set to true (if necessary double-click the line to toggle its value to true).

When unsupported code points are used then you see the little boxes with the hex code.
