Your Firefox program files might be damaged. This is what we generally recommend for that:

Clean Reinstall

We use this name, but it's not about removing your settings, it's about making sure the program files are clean (no inconsistent or alien code files). As described below, this process does not disturb your existing settings. Do NOT uninstall Firefox, that's not needed.

(A) Download a fresh installer for Firefox 46.0.1 from https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/ to a convenient location. (Scroll down to your preferred language.) For maximum plugin compatibility, choose the 32-bit version.

(B) Exit out of Firefox (if applicable).

(C) Rename the program folder as follows (usually only one of these is applicable to your system):

32-bit install on 64-bit Windows

C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox

to

C:\Program Files (x86)\OldFirefox

All other installations

C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox

to

C:\Program Files\OldFirefox

(D) Run the installer you downloaded in step (A). It should automatically connect to your existing settings.

Note: Some plugins may exist only in that OldFirefox folder. If something essential is missing, look in these folders:

  • \OldFirefox\Plugins
  • \OldFirefox\browser\plugins

Hopefully that will patch up any corrupt files and let Firefox start normally.

Thanks for the response jscher2000, I'm in trouble, I do not appear to have been offered the option to select 32 bit version just started to download. Exit out of Firefox cannot open Firefox so assume it's not applicable? How do I rename the program folder? Running 32bit Win10 upgraded from Win7. Was going to say explain as to a 5 year old, but engaged brain an realize that they are wiz kids at that age. Kind regards Robert

I was away at a conference. If you used the main download page, you would get the 32-bit version automatically. If you used the download page I linked to, normally you would get both choices.

To rename a folder, you can open the Windows Explorer program (part of Windows) from the menu or using the shortcut key: hold down the "Windows" key and tap the E key. Once you find the folder you want to rename, right-click it and choose Rename from the right-click context menu. Windows then will let you modify the folder name.
