First, check that the website font and colour settings are appropriate: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/change-fonts-and-colors-websites-use#w_change-font-color. You can choose your own or use the indicated defaults, but definitely leave the box checked for websites to be able to choose their own.

I don't know about Linux, but in Windows the accessibility-improving themes can also affect how pages look in Firefox.

Box checked or unchecked does not matter, text and background both become white on selection and are unreadable.

Issue persists in Safe Mode.

You can try to use a different GTK 3 theme in case the Linux theme you currently use isn't working properly with the current Firefox release.

If Firefox 46.0.1 was running then you had the minimum requirment of GTK 3 already.

As for changing GTK 3 Themes, if Firefox was still running when you changed theme, restart Firefox for the theme to properly load in Firefox.

If GTK 3 was installed on this system, then dpkg couldn't find it and neither could I. From experience, unless I compile a package myself and place it in a non-standard location and create all the symlinks myself, dpkg knows if it is there.

Firefox was restarted after theme change.

Issue still exists.

The only Mozilla part is the forum platform, we're just volunteers. I tried researching this, but ended up admitting to myself I don't know enough about Linux - should have said something in here as well. :P

If Firefox 46.0.1 was running then you had a sufficient version of GTK 3 installed (3.4 or newer as 3.20 is current). Firefox 4.0.1 would not have started if you had GTK 3.3 or older or only a GTK 2 version.

Firefox 46 and newer is themed by GTK3 themes as examples are at http://gnome-look.org/?xcontentmode=167

A alternative until you fix it is you could use the Firefox 45 ESR branch builds as they only get security and allowed stability fixes at most. It is basically Firefox 45 Release but with security fixes and will be supported up till 45.8.0 ESR which is when Firefox 53.0 will be out also.

46.0 on Ubuntu sucks and there is no way to fix it that I can find. The browser is slower, processors are panting, scrolling only works sometimes and anything you select in any window or box disappears.

I reverted to 45.0. Anyone that wants to do this can download the zip file and extract it to any location for which they have write permissions. Start the program by launching the file firefox from within the firefox directory. I initially started it from ~home to make sure it runs and then moved it to /usr/firefox. It works. It's faster and.... bonus... you can see what is selected. I feel like I'm home!

Every site will warn you of security risks and I can't address this issue with any knowledgeable comments. I will have to accept whatever "additional" risks there are to have a browser I can use again.

I have gone through some sort of similar bad experience every time Firefox has been upgraded. I think it may be time to say good bye to an old friend...
