I recently have been working with a lot of friends of mine who are visually impaired. Is there some way to change the display of the address book in Thunderbird to increase the size of the characters; change the display to display different colors; and make it more easily readable? Some of my friends have had problems viewing the address book.

Under the USA's Americans With Disability Act (which is now almost 26 years old) requires that software be designed for persons with visual disabilities. See:

    http://www.ada.gov/pcatoolkit/chap5toolkit.htm
    http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/web-designer/creating-an-ada-compliant-website

I thought I did a pretty exhaustive search but all I could find were references to making changes to the email client portion of Thunderbird but I could find no references (even add ons) for the address book.

Can anyone help us out on this?

Thanks

Have you looked at the Theme Font & Size Changer add-on? https://addons.mozilla.org/en-gb/thunderbird/addon/theme-font-size-changer/ Don't be misled by the fact that it's for Firefox, it works in Thunderbird also. It says that it can change the font in all windows within the application, so I would have thought that would include the Address Book; however, I haven't tried it myself.

Well I tried this suggestion but unfortunately it works great in Firefox but it doesn't seem to work in Thunderbird !!! I even saw that in the address book under options one can change the settings for the email client but apparently it doesn't have any effect on the address book.

As I stated in my original post it is the address book that I need to change the font sizes, colors, etc.

Thanks for the tip(s) and I will definitely use it for Firefox.

Any more ideas for me to try?

Thats very odd, mine works fine in address-book as well. Q: Did you install it in Thunderbird? To be shure download and save the .xpi-file open the "gear-icon" in Thunderbirds addons and install from file.

There is no changes at all in the address book after installation in Thunderbird. I have spent hours trying to get this to work. As I said I do not use the email client in Thunderbird -- only the address book.

Some of my friends who are visually impairs likewise have been trying but without success. A few are even thinking about filing complaints with the US Department of Justice's ADA division since "manufacturers of software" must provide reasonable accommodation to the visually impaired. I am sure that if a complaint were lodged with DOJ it may prove very costly financially and credibility wise!

Don't understand why you cant change it. see clip from my AB Color, style weight, zoom all works. If you only use AB in another program then its up to that program to display whats in the database.

As the Executive Director of a nationwide (USA) disability rights enforcement project, enforceada.com I have placed telephone calls to Mozilla's executive office but not one has responded to my informal inquiries.

The various sight impaired individuals whom I mentioned in my prior postings on here have indicated that at they intend to bring an action in the U.S. District Court (for the various jurisdiction where the individuals reside) against Mozilla as well as to file formal complaints with the appropriate state and federal agencies by the close of business TODAY!

I personally have four computers and as I have previously indicated I have tried repeated (uninstalling and reinstalling the software involved) but to date I have not been able to get any item(s) in the address book of Thunderbird to change in any way.

I certainly wouldn't mind someone signing onto one or more of my computers and seeing if they can resolve these issues. I do know that at least two dozen visually impaired individuals whom I have passed the information provided on here to them and no one to the best of my knowledge has been able to resolve the same issues.

Perhaps when Mozilla finds themselves immersed in a class action lawsuit (never mind the adverse media coverage) someone will "wake up" and take a look at these issues.

Lastly under the Americans With Disabilities Act - Title III, the Mozilla cannot legally use the possibility that there exists "third party software" or vendors that can address these visual obstructions. Therefore, not withstanding that there might be some software, Mozilla will be facing major litigation (at least in the USA) concerning its failure to comply with the requirements of the ADA!!!! It should be noted that the ADA is 26 years old as of next month (June 2016). That should be plenty of time for Mozilla to learn and comply with the ADA.

I am sure that there are enough visually impaired individuals in the USA that Mozilla is making a terrible mistake not correcting these issues. Under federal law in the U.S.A. if "class action status" was certified by a U.S. District Court under the federal court rules in every jurisdiction every member of the class is AUTOMATICALLY a "class plaintiff". Anyone that might desire not to be part of the "class" would have to personally inform the court to "opt out".

While this could financially cripple Mozilla apparently Mozilla's corporate officers have not taking any action to solve these issues.

Since enforceada.com handles complaints concerning physical obstructions under the ADA and the US Architectural Barriers Act ("ABA") there will begin a major worldwide effort to inform everyone of Mozilla's inaction and non-compliance in a few hours!

Thunderbird Address-book view is NOT a freestanding program its part of Thunderbird. The data is kept in DB-files. It's pure data so it can be read from various programs and displayed however those programs like.

By using Thunderbird as the program. You must have Thunderbird loaded and running to be able to change the appearance of that data in Thunderbird address-book view. With the add-on "Theme font and size change" installed in Thunderbird and running within Thunderbird You can, as I have demonstrated, change the appearance of those data. The database will stay unchanged.

The database is in an open format so anyone can make a program accessing it. If you use for example LibreOffice to access the database then its up to LibreOffice to display it. Thunderbird's developer has no say in that.
