I've been using a bookmark for EBay Motors for as long as I have used Firefox. This morning when I clicked on the bookmark it told me it was an "application/octet-stream", and asked me what I wanted to do with the file. I tried both options and neither would allow the file to open. I used a search engine to find Ebay Motors site and tried to open it from there. I got the same notice as I got from my bookmark. It seems as those many of the other sites that I have bookmarked work fine, but I've not checked all of them. Also, in IE the bookmark works fine. Any idea what is going on? The bookmark worked fine the day before yesterday.

What is the URL of the bookmark?

If you use a bookmark to open a specific page on the server then try to navigate to that page starting with the main page or the sign in page of the website in case this bookmark is currently broken.

You can try these steps in case of issues with web pages:

You can reload web page(s) and bypass the cache to refresh possibly outdated or corrupted files.

  • Hold down the Shift key and left-click the Reload button
  • Press "Ctrl + F5" or press "Ctrl + Shift + R" (Windows,Linux)
  • Press "Command + Shift + R" (Mac)

Clear the cache and remove cookies only from websites that cause problems.

"Clear the Cache":

  • Firefox/Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Cached Web Content: "Clear Now"

"Remove Cookies" from sites causing problems:

  • Firefox/Tools > Options > Privacy > "Use custom settings for history" > Cookies: "Show Cookies"

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox menu button/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox menu button/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

The URL is http://www.motors.ebay.com/ I tried all the things that were suggested. Still get the message about the "application/octet-stream". I typed the url in directly and got the same message. I used a search engine to find the EBAY Motors and then clicked on it to open it and got the same message. It does not make any difference if I am in safe mode or not. Cache is cleared, and cookies from EBay Motors have been removed. I've tried a lot of my bookmarks, seems as though this one is the only one that does not work. The URL does load correctly when I use Internet explorer. I have the same bookmark in my IE favorites and it works fine. The bookmark has been working in Mozilla up until today.

I'm redirected to this page if I open the link in the location/address bar:

You can check the Net log and the Network log in the Web Console (Firefox/Tools > Web Developer).

Use Ctrl+F5 or Ctrl+Shift+R to reload the page and bypass the cache to generate a fresh log.

Boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) to see if that has effect.

Do a malware check with several malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.

Please scan with all programs because each program detects different malware. All these programs have free versions.

Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

You can also do a check for a rootkit infection with TDSSKiller.
