How do I stop videos from automatically running? I used to be able to have Flash ask before running videos so I could control what ran.

It seems that you have added the ability to run videos in Firefox but have now prevented users from selecting which they want to run like you could do with the Flash add-in with the ask-to-activate option. How can I stop video from automatically playing when I go to a web page?

I have a bunch of video-blocking tools, for accessibility.

Still, it would be better if we could choose whether and when we want to play video, without requiring us to install blocking tools.

I tried some add ins but they do not resolve the issue. They are a poor band aid trying to resolve a design flaw that MUST BE FIXED by the programmers.

If you search the net you you find many reports of this issue and the security and bandwidth issues is presents.

There is no reason this problem remains unresolved for so long when it was easily addressed by the Flash click-to-play option. That is what is needed now for video playing by Firefox directly.

Thank you for your suggestion anyway.

This extension allows to switch between the Flash player and the HTML5 media player on the YouTube website. YouTube Flash Video Player:

For the HTML5 media player there is this pref that you can set to false on the about:config page.

  • media.autoplay.enabled

cor-el, I will give that a try. I'll let you know if this solves the problem in a few days.

However, if you read the many other complaints about this issue around the net, it seems that even if this halts autoplaying in total, it seems that Firefox still downloads the video, just doesn't play it automatically so Firefox unnecessarily consumes bandwidth and data which is a problem on many cell plans and may become an issue as home plans may be coming with metering soon too. Downloading the videos in ads still includes advertising and tracking info that many Firefox users detest.

This is something that MUST be FIXED by the programmers. It was a foolish oversight by them or a "just don't care" approach which has happened in previous updates of Firefox.

With a lot of formats, each requiring different blocking tools, it can be hard to tell which blocking tips work and which ones don't. I have that set to false, but I had thought that setting had stopped working.

I finally managed to register so I could ask this question and found this discussion and I am astonished that Mozilla does not supply it for FireFox. That there is not a single suitable ad-on is astonishing. The help system associated with this browser is dismal and is typical of the vast gulf between programmers and users. Still, I wouldn't want to use any other browser, and am satisfied despite these idiotic defects.

cor-el, After installing and working with add-ins and the config change you suggested, I have to say it sort of works but not on all sites. Some sites still automatically run videos and ads, on other sites you cannot get the video to run no matter what or have to try and try a dozen times before maybe getting lucky.

So, in sum, your suggestion is appreciated but it does not smoothly solve the problem. For a browser and organization that supposedly focuses on users, privacy and stability, it appears there is much work to go. It seems as though the priority of the end user's experience, which should be paramount, has somehow been put on the back burner.

The amount of and frequency of changes and updates to the browser make the Firefox experience a mess. One never knows how long their configuration will work before one of the many almost weekly updates will change something or disable a configuration, preference or add-in they we happily using. This is an arrogant way to run a company, organization or group and leaves the door open for a competitor to step in and take the customers away.

I agree with your statements. Help is poor and poorly organized. End users are an after thought. Yet I avoid MS IE and Chrome at all costs.

Currently I'm using Firefox 38.0.5 on Fedora 20 with Xfce 4.10. (Somewhat out-of-date because of hardware issues, but I don't think that's the problem.) Firefox has, among other things, Flashblock and Youtube's Autoplay no more installed. As of the last week or so, all Youtube videos autostart when I open the page, even though the site is not whitelisted. I've turned off autostart in my Youtube settings several times, but not only does Youtube ignore the setting, it doesn't save it.

Firefox will be upgraded when I have the time to upgrade Fedora, so any suggestions to upgrade it right now will be ignored, as will any that assume that I'm using Windows.

Youtube could be using HTML5 player when possible instead of the Flash Player.

Nice thought, James, but Youtube is already set correctly. I've asked a question on their support forum, https://productforums.google.com/forum/?hl=en#!topic/youtube/cPMcERykNJA;context-place=forum/youtube so that anybody else that comes here can also check there for possible assistance.
