Setting a new tab with website google.com no longer works with 41.0.1 update

Is there any way to set new tabs to google.com or a site of my choosing? This worked perfectly yesterday until firefox updated. I originally set it under browser.newtab.url in the config but now it doesn't work anymore after the update. It's very frustrating that many updates block features that used to work perfectly, where nowadays, I have to resort to add-ons to get those features back.

Hello bobrooney, yes it is new in 41.0, the browser.newtab.url being removed due to abuse by malware.

If you want to use your home page on the new tab then try the next add-on: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/new-tab-homepage/

but If you want to set another page or a blank page on the new tab then try the next add-on.(you can also use this to set your home page, i have the same for my home page :-) https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/new-tab-override/

thanks for letting me and the rest of us know. i guess pretty much every feature on firefox will eventually become a malware threat. it is sad that they believe the only fix is to get rid of features, but then again they've done that before, so it's no shock.
