What Windows settings or services may affect Firefox autoupdate?
Firefox automatic updating not working is a common problem but in my case the culprit is most probably not on the side of Firefox. I suspect it due to the fact that I can't update almost any of my installed programs if they were launched during a session before logging out from that session.
The thing is I've disabled a number of Windows services and I see this behavior for probably as long as I use this optimized configuration. Here is a list of my system services along with their startup options and state.

I'm almost sure I have found the culprit being the Application Experience service. Apparently if you have it disabled Windows locks the particular executable in an overzealous manner.

hi effgo, it is very unlikely that a windows service is interfering here. what is happening in particular when you try to update firefox - do you get some kind of error message? also, could you go to the firefox menu ≡ > help ? > troubleshooting information, copy the contents of that page and paste them here into a reply on the forum? this might give us a clue what is going on...

I get an error message that Firefox is already (should be "still") running. Same with many other software programs. Peazip, Evernote, uTorrent, you name it.

can you try to run a scan of your system with a few different security tools like the free version of malwarebytes, adwcleaner, & kaspersky security scan?

The issue is present on my system since day one. Unfortunately I also customize my system on day one :) As far as security goes, here's how it looks like on my system: - Windows Dfender and Firewall and UAC enabled - every two weeks I scan >everything< using MBAM, adwcleaner as well as Comodo Essentials.
I'm not desperate to find the answer. This is just my gaming Windows install. Normally I use Linux. I just thought the description of the behavior may ring a bell for someone.
