high cpu usage on new tab
Whenever i open a new tab, CPU usage goes ballistic, memory usage and CPU usage for both the plugin container and firefox.exe itself shoot through the roof, and something keeps resetting my browser.cache value to above the default (and to a "user set" value). Tried plenty of different things, factory-reset, an update, disabling a few of the different plugins (can't imagine why it would be flash or adblock, though). It only seems to happen with the new tab now, whereas before i started trying to fix it, it occurred almost at random.
Several steps i could take beyond this, i suppose, but i'd like to know which is most likely to be efficacious or if this is a specific problem encountered before.

Okay, i refreshed firefox once, updated to 36.0, shut down my computer for the night, restarted my PC the next day, refreshed firefox *again*, disabled a few plugins (Java Deployment Toolkit, OpenH264 Video Codec by Cisco, and Windows Live Photo Gallery), although i doubt those had anything to do with it. Now it seems to not do that thing anymore (it kept doing so through each of those steps otherwise).
Although adblock plus refused to work until i manually told it to block specific ads, which seemed to wake it up.
Did my profile just get tangled up or something, or was it really one of those plugins?
Nope, it's back and worse than before. Memory usage capped out at 1.00 GB. This is ridiculous. How are any plugins running right now? Where's this leakage going?
Is AdBlock Plus the only thing listed under Extensions on the Add-ons page?
Does your new tab page simply display the usual thumbnails of sites you have visited/pinned (typically 12, though at higher zoom levels you may see only 8)?
If your new tab page is set to a web page that uses Flash, try disabling Flash temporarily to see if that is causing the problem. You can open the Add-ons page using either:
- Ctrl+Shift+a
- "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
In the left column, click Plugins, then set Shockwave Flash to "Never Activate" and launch a new window (Ctrl+n). Then try a new tab (Ctrl+t). Any difference?
For the moment i can't get the problem to replicate (i have since tried using AVG TuneUp after figuring out it would give me one try for free, and it included a "Browser Cleanup" to get profile errors along with the standard registry error-defrag set).
Your solution would make some sense, as i have a few sites in the new tab that have flash ads displayed, though not opening to direct video. Thank you!
Adblock was the only active extension after i started trying to combat this problem, btw. Had a few earlier, but very light stuff
