Ask.com seized my home page like other users have had but i cannot get to about:config. Says navigation cancelled and goes no where. When I click on the Mozilla icon it goes to ask.com. Should I uninstall Mozilla and start over?

Possibly from Oracle's Java updater?

I'm going to assume you run Windows. I suggest starting here:

Open the Windows Control Panel, Uninstall a Program. After the list loads, click the "Installed on" column heading to group the infections, I mean, additions, by date. This can help in smoking out undisclosed items that snuck in with some software you agreed to install. Some of these might have no other purpose than to make sure it's hard to remove Ask. Take out as much trash as possible here.

Next, in Firefox, open the Add-ons page using either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Extensions. Then, if in doubt, disable (or Remove, if possible) unrecognized and unwanted extensions.

Often a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.

That should remove the toolbar, but there might be some other settings you want to restore, such as your preferred search engine. For that, I suggest using the icon on the left end of Firefox's built-in search bar.

If you notice your settings changing between sessions -- that is, when you exit and start Firefox up again, it has reverted to unwanted settings -- check for a user.js file as described in this article: How to fix preferences that won't save.

Success?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link} While you are in safe mode;

Type about:addons<Enter> in the address bar to open your Add-ons Manager. Hot key; <Control>(Mac:<Command>)<Shift> A)

In the Add-ons Manager, on the left, select Extensions. Look for and disable ANYTHING that you don't know. Or from Ask.com

Then do this;

Bookmark and use this; Mozilla Search Reset {web link} This add-on is very simple: on installation, it backs up and then resets your search preferences and home page to their default values, and then uninstalls itself. This affects the search bar, URL bar searches, and the home page.

So typing in about:config in the Location (address) bar does not work?. You should be able to load it even offline.

I cannot start firefox in safe mode per your instructions. Can t get to about: config or addons. I uninstalled an adobe update that was installed on the same day as the Ask.com began seizing my home page but ask.com is still there exercising the same screen control. I have Windows 7

Hi Glg712, how far did you get through these steps and when you ran into a problem, how was it different from what I described? https://support.mozilla.org/questions/1022198#answer-633731

I did get to reset Firefox and it now appears to be working sans Ask.com! Thanks all for help!
