Bookmarks (called Favorites in Microsoft Edge) are links you save to web pages that make it easy to get back to your favorite places. This article covers the basics of making and managing Firefox bookmarks.

How do I bookmark a page?

To bookmark a page, just click on the star in the address bar.

The star will turn blue when the page is bookmarked and a window will pop up, so you can name, move or tag your bookmark.

To bookmark all open tabs in a window at once:
  1. Select Bookmark All Tabs… from the Bookmarks menu.

  2. Give the new bookmarks folder a name and choose which folder to store it in.
  3. Click Add Bookmarks to finish.
  1. Right-click on any of the tabs and choose Select All Tabs from the context menu.
  2. Right-click on any tab again and select Bookmark Tabs….

  4. Click Add Bookmarks to finish.
You can also use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Shift + Dcommand + Shift + D to bookmark all open tabs in the current window.

How do I change the name or location of a bookmark?

To edit the details of your bookmark:

  1. Click the star a second time to open the Edit Bookmark dialog box.

  2. In the Edit bookmark box, you can change any of these details:
    • Name: This is the name that Firefox displays for the bookmark in menus.
    • Location: Choose what folder to store your bookmark in by picking one from the drop-down menu (for example, the Bookmarks Menu or Bookmarks Toolbar). In that drop-down menu, you can also select Choose… to see a list of all bookmarks folders or create a new one.
      By default, bookmarks are saved in the last used folder (or in the Bookmarks Toolbar, if you are bookmarking your first page).
    • Tags: You can use tags to help you search through and organize your bookmarks. For more information, see Bookmark Tags - Categorize bookmarks to make them easy to find.
  3. When you have finished editing, click Save to close the box.
Tip: If you don't want to see this editor when saving a bookmark, uncheck Show editor when saving.

How do I organize my bookmarks?

The Library window lets you view and organize all of your bookmarks. You can open the Bookmarks Library window as shown below.

Click the menu button Fx89menuButton to open the menu panel. Click Bookmarks and then click the Manage bookmarks bar at the bottom.

Tip: You can also use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Shift + OCommand + Shift + O to quickly open your Bookmarks Library.

In the Bookmarks Library window you can:

  • Drag your bookmarks into other folders. See Use bookmark folders to organize your bookmarks to learn more. There are some special folders:
    • Bookmarks Menu: Bookmarks in this folder will appear in the Firefox Sidebar and Menu bar or toolbar Bookmarks menu.
    • Bookmarks Toolbar: Bookmarks in this folder will appear in the Bookmarks Toolbar, if it's turned on.
  • Sort your bookmarks to quickly find the ones you want.
  • Search your bookmarks by name.
  • Edit your bookmarks' details, including keywords (see below).
  • Open a bookmark in the current tab, double-clicking on it.
  • Right-clickHold down the control key while you click on a bookmark to view other options in the context menu, such as Open in New Tab, Open in New Private Window, Delete Bookmark, etc.
  • Backup, restore, export and import your bookmarks.

How do I access my bookmarks?

You can search pages you have bookmarked by typing their name in the address bar. As you type, a list of web pages that you've bookmarked, tagged and visited will appear. Bookmarked pages will have a star next to them. The search can be restricted to bookmarks if you start with * and a space. Then simply click one of the pages, and you'll be taken there instantly. Alternatively, you can activate bookmark searching from the main menu:

  1. Click the menu button Fx89menuButton to open the menu panel.
  2. Click Bookmarks.
  3. Activate bookmark searching by clicking Search bookmarks.
  4. Type the name of the bookmark you're looking for into the address bar.

Firefox will display only the matching bookmarks as you type.

Note: Search bookmarks is also available in the Bookmarks menu, accessible if you added the Bookmarks MenuBookmarks Menu button - Proton button to the toolbar.

Bookmarks Toolbar

Firefox's Bookmarks toolbar gives you quick access to often-used bookmarks. For new users, bookmarks are placed by default here.

To enable the Bookmarks Toolbar:

  1. Click the menu button Fx89menuButton, then click More tools and select Customize Toolbar…
  2. Select the Toolbars dropdown menu at the bottom of the window.
  3. Select Bookmarks Toolbar. The menu options Always Show, Never Show, and Only Show on New Tab will be available for you to choose when you want the Bookmarks Toolbar to be visible.
  4. Click the Done button when you're finished.

  1. Click the View menu at the top of the screen and go down to Toolbars.
  2. Select Bookmarks Toolbar. The menu options Always Show, Never Show, and Only Show on New Tab will be available for you to choose when you want the Bookmarks Toolbar to be visible.
Tip: You can also use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Shift + BCommand + Shift + B to show or hide the Bookmarks Toolbar.

Other Bookmarks folder

You will see an Other Bookmarks folder icon at the end of the Bookmarks toolbar if the Other Bookmarks folder in your Library contains any bookmarks. This makes it easier to find bookmarks stored in that folder. To remove the Other Bookmarks folder icon from the Bookmarks toolbar, see Remove the Other Bookmarks folder from the Bookmarks Toolbar.

Firefox Sidebar and Menu

You can view and access all of your bookmarks from the Firefox Sidebar and from the Menu bar Bookmarks menu, if the Menu bar is enabled.

The Bookmarks Menu Bookmarks Menu button - Proton toolbar button is not shown by default, but you can add it by customizing your Firefox toolbar.

How do I add the Bookmarks Menu button to the toolbar?

  1. Click the menu button Fx89menuButton, then click More tools and select Customize Toolbar…
    • A special tab will open which allows you to drag and drop items in or out of the overflow menu and the toolbar.
  2. Drag the Bookmarks Menu Bookmarks Menu button - Proton button to the toolbar.
  3. Click Done.

To remove the button, use the above steps to drag the Bookmarks Menu button out of the toolbar.

How to use keywords with bookmarks

You can use keywords to easily access your bookmarks. When you assign a keyword to a bookmark, you can simply type the keyword into the address bar and press EnterReturn to open the bookmark.

To assign a keyword to a bookmark:

  1. Open the Library window and select the bookmark.
  2. Click the keyword field at the bottom of the window.
  3. Type your desired keyword.
    • The keyword may contain letters, digits and special characters (for example: - _ ' " , . : ; = / \ ( ) [ ] { } ! & @ ~). It must not contain spaces and must not start or end with these characters: ? * ^ $ % # +
    • The keyword must not be the same as a search engine's keyword. For instance, if a search engine has the keyword @g, the bookmark's keyword cannot be @g, but it can be g.
    • If the chosen keyword was already assigned to another bookmark, it will be reassigned to the new one.
Note: Outside the Library, you can access the keyword field from the context menu by right-clickingholding down the Control key while you click the bookmark and then selecting Edit Bookmark.

How do I import bookmarks from another browser or profile?

Firefox lets you import bookmarks from other browsers installed on your computer. It also lets you import other data, such as browsing history and saved passwords, from some of these browsers. To learn more, see Import data from another browser.
