I can't open my email in Thunderbird.

I can't open my email. Any second attempt to re-open it brings up a new window which shows the email's title with a RED BOX appended at the end. Clicking on this box sends the email somewhere else! I can see the text by using 'print preview' but no graphics or links come through, naturally. Suggestions?
