2 days ago, firefox just stopped responding. When I open, the start up screen shows but navigating to any other web pages is not possible. All I see is "connecting" and it just spins. No warnings or time outs. I thought it was an issue with my firewall so I went in and manually added firefox to the list of "allowed". That didn't help. I removed all apps, extensions and themes then tried to reset.. that didn't help because firefox wont restart it just hangs and I have to use task manager to end the process. I have tried a forced uninstall then reinstall.. nothing. At this point nothing seems to work. Maybe there is a simple solution I'm just not seeing. For now, it is uninstalled but I really would like to know if there is a way to fix it because firefox is my favorite browser. I'm not finding any maleware or viruses on my computer and other browsers are working just fine.

I had not been looking for anything to do with health or handwashing. It was as if I had asked a question about preventing the flu??. I had just finished reapplying for California lifeline service on my telephone and had done it online. I then went back to my Web mail page & sent a message to Zoom panel whom I have done surveys for sev. years about why I hadn't been getting any surveys lately. I had just bfinished this when on my address bar a new address?? came up "1402.jpg(JPG IMAGE,425x338 pixels). When I clicked on it--itwas a picture of someone washing their hands vigorously--like in a medical illustration!. This had nothing to do with anything I had done all day??!! I tried to get rid of it--but to no avail.

I have been using Cyberfox and Waterfox, both being 64bit browsers. I haven't had any serious issues that can not be worked around. Tonight, I decided to watch something on Netflix and it will not play on Waterfox. I called Netflix customer support and got someone who I do not entirely trust and was told I should use IE. This is because she only uses Apple. When I told her I was using a PC, she acted like she didn't know what I was talking about and kept asking whether this was a tablet or some other portable. She also insisted that I need to download the ap before Netflix will work. When I finally got her to recognize that just maybe I might know what I was talking about, she started attacking Firefox saying that it is not supported by Netflix because what ever I'm using is not authorized. Well, hell. The only version of anything I have tried that is somewhat different from anything else is your 64bit Waterfox. Ok, I get it. She's a Apple snob with no tolerance for anything un-apple, and even less tolerance for someone who tries to pin her down on an answer to a technical question concerning Netflix. Instead she decided to condescend and wanted to hold my hand thru going to google.com to download Firefox rather than give me an answer. Or do what she told me to do first, use IE.

Now, for the technical part. Is there something about Waterfox that will not play Netflix streams. It plays anyone else's stream with out any problems. Oh, it has an issue with player on the RDIO site also.

What is the work around for these problems? If any?

Firefox 5 (v31.0) has broken browser.tabs.closebuttons = 2 That setting is 2 in my about:config, also I have Tab Control 5.5 with Close Buttons = None.

Either way the latest Firefox is ignoring both settings and now displaying an X on my active tab. Along with the new interface of the tabs is overlaping the tabs next to it and causing me to close tabs instead of switching tabs. Is this another case where Firefox knows best, and just changes things because they can?

What is the proper 'new' code to totally disable the X on all tabs?

Here's what I posted on the Firefox Developer site, after spending enough time there to get a sense of what they're doing, and why they have totally failed to issue a 64-bit version of Firefox. So, my question is: where can I register an email address, to make sure I get notified when Firefox issues a 64-bit version?

I think I'm starting to see why the "developer community" for Firefox has failed to grasp the NEED to issue a 64-bit version. It clearly has become a very cozy and comfortable group of insiders, who can all feel comfortable with the tech-nerd level of the group, and don't want to be bothered by us outsiders who don't belong to developer groups. Meanwhile, the fact that Java compatibility, across different 32-versus-64 bit browsers, is causing us outsiders lots of problems, is driving outsiders like me to say, "To hell with those nerds. If they can't find some way to issue a modern version of Firefox, I'm deleting it, and going to Chrome, instead, as my main alternative to IE". You guys provided a real nice bridge, over the past few years, which really did help force Microsoft make IE a whole lot better. But, you got just too incestuous, and inbred, and you failed to see what was going on outside your little club. Please send me an email, if you ever issue a 64-bit Firefox. I like Firefox a lot, and would love to use it again, some day.

The tabs used to be a specific width (estimated at 1/8th the window width). When I closed multiple tabs by constantly clicking on their "X" they would even maintain width as the number decreased, allowing me to finish closing without having to move the mouse.

Now, the tabs automatically stretch out across the window. This kills the above behavior, and it's irritating. But I can't find a way to revert the behavior.

Since a while back, the four choices in the restore section (Tabs from Other Devices, Restore Previous Session, Recently Closed Tabs and Recently Closed Windows) have been greyed out. The keyboard shortcuts don't work, and nor does Undo Closed Tab in the tab context menu.

I have found and tried various fixes for this, including:

  • Starting Firefox in Safe Mode without addons.
  • Resetting Firefox.
  • Changing the values of browser.sessionstore.max_tabs_undo and browser.sessionstore.max_windows_undo in about:config.
  • Checking to see if I have a user.js in the Firefox profile. (I don't.)
  • Checking that Private Browsing isn't the default mode. (It isn't.)
  • Creating a new profile to see if it had the same issue. (It did.)
  • Running anti-malware scans. (BitDefender and SpyBot.)
  • Disabling my anti-virus and anti-malware temporarily.

None of these solve my problems.

Tabs from Other Devices is greyed out, but I have never used it, and it might have been greyed out previously.

History works in general. Sites I visit are added to the log.

Preferences are properly saved when I change them.

Any advice on how to fix the problem would be much appreciated, as I am very fond of these features and used them often until they stopped working.

ADDENDUM

After looking through the Modified Preferences list created by the Troubleshooter, I have now also tried resetting the following:

  • browser.places.smartBookmarksVersion
  • browser.newtabpage.storageVersion
  • browser.cache.disk.capacity
  • browser.cache.disk.smart_size.first_run
  • browser.cache.disk.smart_size.use_old_max
  • browser.cache.disk.smart_size_cached_value

The problem persists.

I have Windows 8. I have the latest versions of IE and Firefox. I have Adobe Flash 12.0.0.44 downloaded. I had to do so in IE. I was not able to download it in Firefox. I did download Adobe Shockwave 12.0.9.149 in Firefox and enabled it in the plug ins. It still tells me that I need to download Adobe Flash Player. I have it downloaded. In firefox, when I try to download it again, it tells me that my antivirus software must allow me to download software, which it does. I have allows disabled it and it still doesn't work. It doesn't show the yellow download now bar that shows up in IE. I need FF for proper use of my company website. I can watch videos on youtube/espn just fine in IE but it still tells me to download it when I'm in FF. I have exited FF multiple times but have not restarted my computer if that's the case. I will now. Otherwise, please advise what steps I may need to take.

There are post EVERYWHERE about how bad Firefox has gotten, yet when I complain, a techie gets an attitude and calls it a rant. Yeah, it is a rant, just like this is. If you spent more time reading the problems and fixing them, maybe Firefox would not have so many problems. There are so many, I can't even start to list them, anyway, they're already listed in the forums dozens of times.

I went back to FF version 26.0 from version 30.0. It works like a charm. So how can you tell me there aren't any problems and FF doesn't get worse as you 'improve' it with a newer version? Now it keeps asking me to update to version 30.0 and I can't get rid of it. Been there, done that, not again. I have to keep saying ask me later. Otherwise it works fine.

Now make sure you delete this so other people can't view your sarcastic remarks and deny there are more problems than ever or maybe instead you can read some of the posts with problems and address them.

After years of happily using Firefox, sudden, recurrent calamity

I've been primarily a Firefox user (with Chrome as back-up) for years, with only occasional, and minor, problems. I'm automatically updated to the latest version of Firefox.

So my browser life has been good--uneventful, even serene.

Until yesterday. Then Firefox suddenly stopped responding. Once, then twice, all together about five times yesterday, it would stop responding and I'd have to close the program and restart. And the pattern has repeated itself today. Sometimes when it's not responding I can still do things like open a new tab, but not download files or play a YouTube video--in fact there's a blank space where the video should be. Sometimes I can't even close Firefox in order to restart without turning off my computer.

Let me emphasize that nothing has changed in the manner of my Firefox use to possibly trigger all this. I'm doing exactly what I always did, nothing more.

My first awareness came when Windows notified me that Firefox had stopped responding and wanted me to click on "close program" in the dialog box and close Firefox, which I did. Windows said they would search for a solution, and let me know. At one point Mozilla came on the screen to announce a crash, and I filled out a crash report. Each time my first awareness of a problem comes when Windows appears in a little box and announces that Firefox has stopped responding. Soon after, the lack of responsiveness will become obvious to me in a variety of ways.

One notable point: if I restart Firefox everything will be fine for a while, and then, out of the blue, the unresponsiveness will recur.

I want to know why this is happening. Since my internet browsing pattern has not changed its nature, does the fault lie with this new version of Firefox? Or is there some malware that is responsible? I should emphasize that I've been using Chrome in the meantime and it has exhibited none of the problems of Firefox.

Actually, rather than my engaging in ignorant speculation, I'll just wait for analysis by the experts in this forum.

I am using Windows XP PRO, 32BIT......I have read (and checked) all the options but still can't find my last browsing session from yesterday. I opened a new tab from 'My Favorites', only the one tab opened, so now that tab is my 'last session'..... What can I do now, please? I have lots of tabs open for my research, some I might be able to remember, some are bookmarked, but can't always remember the names to find them again! I have a lot of files bookmarked..... Previously I have always managed to restore them by clicking onto Session Manager, restore last session, but the button seems to have disappeared. Please, I am old & need (detailed) easy step by step instructions! I just remembered I did some work early this morning, it was working ok then. I went off to make breakfast. When I came back, the computer had been logged off & re-started. But I have no idea why. Maybe something happened then? I now can't get this morning's session nor yesterday's session, plus all the tabs I had open for research........ Thanks in advance..... Sylvia

There are several buttons in Google search result pages that won't respond when I click on them (safesearch and options buttons on the "images" page; also, the pulldown button to access cached pages in the regular Google search results page). I've tried disabling all my add-ons, restarting Firefox in Safe Mode (all add-ons disabled), and cleared all my Google cookies, but none of those make any difference. All those buttons work in IE, but haven't tried any other browser. Other than removing and re-installing Firefox (which I don't want to do b/c I don't want to have to rebuild all my customizations), what else can I try? TIA
