I'm used to scrolling up and down a web page using up and down arrows. Until a few days ago, when I pressed the down arrow key, the page would move down a bit; i.e., 4-5 lines if text and about the same amount if viewing an image. The up arrow key worked the same way except in the opposite direction.

Now, on FireFox 10.0.1 on Windows 7 Professional, the first time I press the down arrow on a new page, it scrolls all the way to the bottom and then, if I press the up key, it returns me all the way to the top.

If I then click the cursor inside the text - say at mid screen, and then press the down key the cursor moves down one line at a time and no scrolling occurs until the cursor is on the very bottom of the window. If I then try to scroll back up using the arrow key, the cursor moves up one line at a time and no scrolling occurs until it's on the top line.

This happens only on Windows 7 Pro, not on XP nor my Linux (Ubuntu) machine. They continue to behave the (good) old way.

Anybody know how to fix this?

Firefox won't start even in safe mode. As soon as it tries to load I get the crash report. In the windows task manager 'processes' tab it shows for a second or two then disappears. It also happens to Thunderbird but all other programmes work OK so it seems to be something with the Mozilla tag. I have the latest version of both and windows is uptodate. I use a backup facility and have tried restoring from a previous (working) backup but it doesn't solve it. I've also used windows restore but that hasn't solved it. I'm using exactly the same backup copies on a laptop and that works OK so I'm wondering if the PC registry has been corrupted. I have antivirus running permanently and I've done a malware scan but nothing has been identified.

Hi, I've just got a new PC so have a fresh install, but firefox seems to display funny lines as I'm scrolling down the page. These lines can disappear or change if you scroll further, or if the browser loses focus. Any ideas? It's really frustrating - I use FF for development so it's a real pain. I've uploaded a screenshot here . Thanks

It's quite simple. I have a Canadian English dictionary installed on Firefox, but whenever I set it to that dictionary, it will be back to en-US when Firefox restarts. This did not used to be a problem, it kicked in only a month or so ago. Before then, it was permanently on en-CA.

I've seen a few questions on this site talking about all preferences not saving, which is not the case, and some talking about some preferences not saving if you have a user preferences file, which I don't. It's really just the dictionary thing. Any information to keep this switched to Canadian would be appreciated.

I see this issue is widespread, but some of the "easy" fixes are for computer geeks only. I would like to know if anyone could tell me how to get rid of the welcome page without delving into the guts of my computer? I don't write software, and I'm not going to jump through hoops to try to get rid of this nuisance.

There has to be more people like me who look at some of these replies and think, "What?"...especially when we don't see what you're apparently seeing when you "walk us through" steps to correct this issue.

I feel Firefox should address this personally, since it's their update that screwed us all up. Supposedly, updates are supposed to get us "ready to enjoy the very latest in speed, flexibility and security"...yeah, okay. How about fixing this bug, Firefox??? Instead of making your users solve the issues for you. This is ridiculous.

If no one can help me solve this without me having to get a degree in computer science, can someone tell me how to get rid of the update altogether? I'll take my chances by NOT being "ready to enjoy the latest in speed, flexibility and security"...

I'm sorry for the frustration, but this is just unacceptable. We shouldn't have to go through this every time we update. Thanks for any help!

I just recently installed Firefox for the first time. It seems nice and quick. The version is reported as: "10.0.1".

I wanted to save some text from a web page, so navigated to that page, selected the text, and pressed the Control-C combination to COPY the selected text to the buffer. For example, the text I selected looked something like this:

  Harry
  Ron
  Hermione
  Hagrid
  Albus

NOTE: Each line of text has a small icon to the left of the text. It is not reasonable to COPY and PASTE each line individually, as there can be hundreds of lines of data. I recall, however, that doing a COPY and PASTE on this data into Microsoft's Excel will produce cells which have the icons included in the cell, but unfortunately one cannot can't get rid of them! At least I've never found a way to remove them, but that's another issue.  :)

Once I'd done the COPY operation I switched to a Notepad window and did a PASTE operation. To my surprise, the text from each line was duplicated. It looked like this:

  Harry Harry
  Ron Ron
  Hermione Hermione
  Hagrid Hagrid
  Albus Albus

Thinking that there might be something unusual about the web page I looked at the source, but it appeared "normal" -- that is, as expected.

Note: I have done this operation several times before, and have never seen this occur before.

Note: In the actual data some of the lines have quoted text in them. Curiously there is weird behavior on these lines. In some cases the entire line is shown only once. (These occur at the top of the line, and the quoted text is at the beginning of the name.) When quoted text appears "later" in the name, in some cases the quoted text is duplicated, and in other cases the quoted text is missing altogether! I have also noticed an error with the quoted text, and so will be reporting that to the web site which generates the HTML.

Note that each line of "text" is "anchor text", so if I click on a name the browser navigates to a page for that name.

I believe that the problem is that the COPY operating in Firefox is not simply copying the visible text, but also the ALT=

Below is a sample of what the source HTML looks like:

<a class="lnk" target="_blank" href="http://details.aspx?id=Harry">
   <img width="16" height="16" alt="Harry" class="tb_icon" src="http://.../Harry.gif"/>
   <span>Harry</span></a>

(Because of the true length of the lines in the source HTML, I have stripped out the actual URL of the site.)

To make sure I wasn't imaging this difference I repeated the process within Internet Explorer. In that browser I did not get duplicated data.
