I've been using Firefox for a while, and while there are many things I like about it, it has always been a resource hog. In the past I could get around this by just killing Firefox in Windows Resource Manager and restarting, but ever since getting a new computer an upgrading to Windows 11, it's gotten worse. Every couple of days my computer freezes for 10 or more minutes, I'm having to do a hard reboot ever few days, and I'm even bluescreening about twice a month. I'm pretty sure Firefox is the culprit because killing it will usually resolve the issue.

I'm wondering if there is some way to put Firefox in a sandbox so it does not consume nearly all available memory and other computer resources. It is by far the biggest consumer of resources on my system and I do not want to dedicate 4GB+ of memory to an app that is just showing a couple of web pages and playing YouTube videos.

Also one time today I lost all my pinned tabs and had to manually restore them one at a time.

Using Ubuntu 24.04.2 and latest Firefox. Cleared cache but doesn't help.

Have been having an issue for the past month or two where if left in the background firefox will slowly start to eat up my available ram. I was using it like this perfectly fine for years previous to now.

I dont have this issue when I'm actively using it, only when I tab away from it and specifically its not on screen. Once I tab back to firefox the ram usage immediately dips back down to normal. I have tried many things to try and solve this like doing a clean install of firefox, getting rid of extensions, clearing my browser cache, closing all other apps to verify it was just firefox, clearing my history, turning on hardware acceleration. Nothing seems to help, im really at a loss and I don't understand what changed besides it being updated in the past couple of months.

My computer is fairly heavy duty and I have 16gb of ddr4 ram that again was working perfectly fine to run firefox before these past couple of months. As a result of this issue however if left in the background for too long on accident firefox uses up all my idle ram and starts causing other programs to not be able to run and has even crashed my computer previously when trying to run a program like clip studio paint.

I have noticed that while running the firefox task manager there is definitely some difference in memory usage when i tab back in after letting it be in the background so I have attached screenshots of the regular usage while tabbed in and the captured usage when i tab back in.

Any possible solution is welcome because I really enjoy using firefox and i dont want to have to switch browsers unless absolutely necessary.

Is this a bug or config problem?

Occasionally, FF (Linux desktop) starts using a lot of memory. I kill tabs (sometimes it is OK to kill YouTube or X, sometimes not)

Eventually it starts impacting the system using so much memory. I terminate the FF instance. Often. More often than not. There is a separate task still running and I get the "Firefox is still running" when I try to restart. I then kill the remaining FF task via the OS or the process monitor. Then FF restarts.

Is this an issue with addons (I am running very few - uBlock Orign, and Privacy Badger and Cookie AutoDelete. Are the only ones active most of the time) Or is it an actual bug with garbage collection, and tasks getting away? Or is it an OS issue?

On my main desktop computer whenever I try to open a Channel page on YouTube, Firefox will start to lag and either tell me it is slowing down Firefox and I need to stop the tab or just crash.

Sometimes after I refresh a random number of times, it will load the videos tab and then be fine on that channel. On other occasions it will never load the channel's Home page or Videos page and I have to close the tab because it won't load or change.

This only happens on my desktop computer. It it more likely to happen if the page has a home screen video.

Let me know what you think. Thanks

I have noticed a weird scrolling bug in Firefox since either v138.0 or v138.0.1.

If you go to https://www.architecturaldesigns.com/ and select any floor plan, if you attempt to scroll down the page the page will not let you and snap back to the top.

I tried this in Firefox troubleshooting mode with all add-ons / themes disabled and encountered the same behavior. This is something that just started happening in the last version release or two.

This is present both on Windows as well as Mac versions of the Firefox browser.

Hello. My tablet, has limited memory, due to its age. I am now finding that one of the main reasons why it is so slow is because whenever I open firefox, it opens multiple firefox processes which drain the memory and in some cases crashes the system. I have followed all the advice given to reduce these multiple processes, however nothing seems to work and at least 6-8 firefox processes open each time I open it. I have unchecked the recommended performance settings as well as hardware acceleration boxes. However, I cannot find where to set the content process limit to 1. Please tell me how to do this and if there anything else I can try to stop it opening multiple processes or I may be forced to ditch Firefox altogether for an alternate such as Bing, Chrome or DuckDuckGo. Many thanks. Charlie

I have tried every possible solution I can find from clearing cookies and cache to refreshing Firefox even scanned for malware and virus nothing has worked please help me figure out what is happening and why it's only with Firefox that I am having this problem and its not hardware can play online just fine and download games from steam perfectly fine.

For the past few weeks, my PC reliably crashed after a few chess games on chess.com with Firefox. GPU and Memory benchmarks are running through without issues, it did crash when starting a Steam game once before, but I wasn't able to find out why. At this point, I'm really curious to learn about what could possibly cause this, but don't really know where to look for it. Really wondering what special thing is happening after a game there that doesn't happen with other websites/browsers. Would really appreciate your help!

Running Wayland on Archlinux 6.15.7 with AM5 CPU and DDR5 memory. Sometimes wondering if it's a graphics issue since my display is connected via the iGPU, but I also have an NVIDIA graphics card installed that I use for games sometimes.

Firefox kept eating my RAM, running dozens of processes. I have gone into about:config and set the dom.ipc.processCount to 1 - then I restarted Firefox and found 5 processes running straightaway before even using the browser. I closed it down and have started it again and now there are 11 processes running with just one tab open. Firefox(9044) Utility(7552) JavaScript oracle Network (15912) Data Decoder (11364) GPU (18744) About pages (12536) Preloaded new tab Extensions (20544) Preallocated (16132) Preallocated (13780) Preallocated (16044)

The problem repeats on three different computers which are not infected with malware. One computer with slightly less RAM I now cant even use Firefox at all (though all other browsers work fine) because the tabs constantly crash due to the high number of processes. Is there any way to set the process limit low in a way that Firefox actually responds to?
