hi about 2 days ago ff stopped working. i type an address into the usual window like i've done a million times, hit enter, and nothing happens. i click on a bookmark, the url shows up in the address window, but nothing happens. there are maybe 3 bookmarks that still work, and all the rest are duds. auto-complete still works, but firefox refuses to take to the address. i get a lot of "flash crashes" (thanks, adobe) so i recently updated flash, and that started the problem. this is why i distrust updates. (for the record, i keep current with firefox updates, even though it is still bloatware that uses 2 GB just to run 3 windows. anyway, any help you could offer would be most... helpful! (not sure why my exclamation points are printing as open-brackets, but hey, whatever, that's the internet) thanks, tim

Hi,
since the update to FF 53.0 (and now also with 53.0.2) I've had it freeze on me 5 times and every time it also completely locked up my PC - mouse was frozen, Ctrl+Alt+Del didn't work, gave it 10 minutes but was still frozen afterwards - and I had to shut my PC down forcefully.
My system: FF 53.0.2 (32 bit) Win 7 (64 bit) 16gb RAM FF Addons: NoScript & AdBlock Plus
No changes in terms of add ons, no Windows updates or new programs that could have caused this. The only programs running in the background are/were my anti-virus/anti-malware programs, Skype, Outlook, Rainmeter and my mouse driver (all of which I've used for at least the last 6 months). The first two times it happened when I tried to restore tabs from the "oops, that shouldn't have happened" page and the last 3 times when I opened a new tab (with 1-2 other tabs open at max, usually only an empty one!). The 3rd time was 2 weeks ago, the 4th time on May 9th when I opened a new tab after clicking on one of my tiles on the "new tab" page (no other tabs were open at the same time!). Today it happened again! I installed a bunch of Windows updates a couple of days ago and this time I had Minecraft loading up and was watching a movie (DVD) in VLC (no Outlook running this time) but when I opened a second tab in FF, the picture froze again. The weird part is that the sound of the movie kept playing but it didn't let me move the mouse or open the Task Manager. I've never had a video run at the time of the freeze, so I don't know if Windows would have still kept playing the sound the other times.
I can play really hardware-intensive games that use 50+% of my cpu (not that there are a lot that do) and a lot of my gpu's power/VRAM and/or RAM (sometimes goes as high as overall 13gb/16gb) but I've never had any freezes just with games + watching a video at the same time, it always happens while opening a website through one of the tiles or a new tab directly in FF 53.x!

My computer is 6 years old so it is pretty old in computer terms. It has Windows 7 32 bit and 4G of RAM. Firefox has been getting slow for a while but now it just will not open at all when I click on it though when I shut down the computer it says "firefox needs to be shut down force re-start".
I have tried installing and re-installing, deleting all the App Data etc but this achieves nothing. I can't even get the program to respond by going to all programs ans using shift key to open in safe mode. Internet Explorer and Chrome work perfectly and load within a few seconds. I support the ideals of Mozilla and use the browser on my phone and Ipad but I am finally losing patience with it on desk top. Any ideas on how to solve this before I walk away? I have tried every single option you list on your site and nothing.

This started to happen two days ago. I'm using Firefox 36.0.1 on my brother's laptop, always using private browsing, and things seem to work fine for 5-10 minutes. After that, the browser won't load or refresh any website at all, it just shows the spinning wheel and/or a white page, with no error messages.
After trying to close and open process again, I receive a dialog saying that Firefox is running already. I can see the process running but I can't close it with task manager. Have to reboot and manually delete the parent.lock file on my profile folder.
Once I can open it, after 5 minutes, it happens again.
What I've tried: Deleted cache, cookies and history. Disabled extensions. Disabled Javascript. Went to normal browsing. Went Into safe mode. Made a new profile. Refreshed Firefox. Uninstalled and reinstalled.
Last seemed to work, installed Adblock and managed to recover my bookmarks. Worked for 1 hour, then it happened again.
Checked for my firewall, there was an exception already. Checked my antivirus, my brother's laptop uses Avast, disabled webshield. No need to check for proxys, don't use them. Everything was working fine till two days ago.
Posting from my desktop computer. My current browser has more plugins and extensions installed.
This one works fine. So I'm putting my brother's specs.
Version: 36.0.1 Extensions: only Adblock Plus and Download Helper Plugins: Shockwave Flash and Java all up-to-date. OS: Win 8 64bit Sys Specs (don't know if this is relevant): Intel I7 3,5GHz 8GB RAM

My computer crashed recently and I had to reload Firefox... had no problem right up till I switched off last night.
This morning I went to go online and I got a "Firefox is already running" which I thought was odd as I only just started the computer. So I hit the "close Firefox" dialog box and tried again...same thing. I have turned the laptop off waited a couple of minutes and switched on again, same thing. I also get that my profile is missing or damaged and cant be loaded...
I uninstalled it and reinstalled it and tried again, same thing.
I went to troubleshooting and it tells me to go to the Firefox file in Appdata to find the profile, mine doesnt have one. I ran a search for anything Firefox related, nothing
I cleaned my cache and cookies last night, so I dont think its an issue with that, I am just dead in the water and have no idea how to get back
For information, I was running the latest version and have Windows 8.2 64 bit

Firefox within the last month has started freezing every time on a Windows 7 laptop every time I try one of the above actions. I have tried "refresh Firefox", safe mode, uninstall/reinstall, nothing seems to help. Can't open prefs so I have not been able to turn off hardware acceleration. However, I was able to set up Firefox Sync which let me get my bookmarks to another PC and it looks like make setting changes on that PC affects this copy of FF so I <think> I've also tried turning off hardware acceleration. Nothing works. Especially frustrating that the options freeze. Firefox has worked for years on the affected laptop, is there anything I can do except give up and switch to another browser?

I have been having an issue with Firefox freezing "sporadically" on my PC. In a nutshell, Firefox freezes typically once per boot-up cycle. By freeze, I mean that my whole PC locks up and is unusable, no clicking is allowed for any task, but my mouse is free to scroll around. Once the computer unfreezes, typically under 1 minute later, whatever action I had taken will pop up (including but not limited to ctrl-alt-del). This freezing only occurs on certain websites, and only after boot-up. The frequent problem I have isolated is yahoo mail, where the browser becomes stuck on "read s.yimg.com".
As far as I know, this only occurs shortly after boot up. If I magically avoid culprit sites, the PC eventually reaches a state where I have yet to witness a freeze. So say I get lucky on a few websites and edit a word doc for an hour, when I eventually load yahoo mail, it may NOT freeze.
I am currently running Firefox version 43.01. I had been using 36.04 until I updated to 43.0, and the problem started occurring on 36.04. I ran Firefox via safe mode, and also manually disabled all add-ons, but the problem persisted.
Also gave google chrome a shot, and I did not come across this same issue.
Anybody see this before? Curious for any insight you are able to provide, and a possible solution. While it may seem like a stupid question (do stupid questions actually exist?), could this be a virus? My gut tells me no, but I am no computer specialist.
Thanks!

Hello, I have had this problem for a while now: Whenever I have a facebook tab open for too long Firefox stops playing media of all kinds. Videos don't play, gifs don't animate and sounds (even facebook messenger or whatsapp web notifications) simply don't play at all. The problem stops immediately after I close the tab that has facebook on it.
I have searched everywhere and haven't found someone with the exact same problem, even though some where a little similar.

I was having Firefox (slow) performance issues and decided to re-install. After re-installation, firefox would not start (could see the process firing but closing immeadiatey, the app didnt even open). Upon advice received here (, installed an earlier version (54) of firefox which started. Then I did all the updates to recent versions and it kept working. Only then I realized I had just installed the 32-bit version. As I try to use the same procedure to install the 64-bit version, I am back to the same problem (firefox not starting). Now I found that I can get firefox to start by renaming the firefox.exe to something else (e.g. firefox1.exe). It does start but it seems the intial performance problems persist. Additionally, it keeps asking me if I want to make Firefox my default browser. I keep answering yes to no effect as every time I start firefox it asks me the same thing. If I try to make Firefox my default browser through windows settings (or control panel) firefox is not listed by windows as an installed application. In short, I cannot get the 64-bit installation being recognized by windows (windows 10 home) and without renaming the exe file. In addition It seems to perform poorly.
I have also checked for malware, nothing detected.

Using FF 64 on a Win10/64bit.
All other browsers work fine (IE/Chrome/edge) i think (!) after windows10 update (the 'october update') i just installed since PC just came out of box... it stopped working. PC has been on and used with FF for few days already, had no problems, synced bookmarks fine etc.
Now: - no url loaded if entered manually - no url loaded if selected from bookmarks - no settings page loaded most of times. - sometimes (!) i can load "options/preferences" - i can never load about: functions
Checked and done so far without luck: - re-install (removed, restarted, checked for removal of Mozilla directory, installed) - created new profile - checked proxy settings in settings : manual / no proxy - checked windows firewall settings and even defaulted them etc - started in 'safe modus' (no extensions loaded) - not using 'offline' modus
anybody? i've spent a few hours now and near close to leaving it and using Chrome...

Hello! (FF 65.0.1) I recently tried to access the preferences page but I get an error of "Unresponsive Script" on "resource://gre/modules/Localization.jsm:444"
Starting in Safe Mode solved the issue so I opened FF again and disabled all extensions but not luck. So I tried disabling Hebrew (using Hebrew on my FF) on the languages tab and it solved the issue.
What can I do to keep using Hebrew and to be able to access the preferences?
Thanks!

Hi, I have gone through all the troubleshooting procedures you suggested to fix the problem of a script running that causes extreme slowness on my computers (I have 3 so it is not a computer issue). It only happens when I am looking at facebook posts in my email, or at least that is when it begins. My firefox is up to date, that is whenever I get an update from you it is installed. Firefox works fine so long as I am not going through my facebook posts in my email. The last time I did the troubleshooting process it cleared and messed up all my settings so I am not willing to do that again. I am looking for a real solution that will not cause a reset to all my settings but will enable me to actually look at my email without the computer creeping along. I have more than adequate internet service, I have AT&T Uverse 12 meg, so it is not my internet connection, I believe it is a problem with an incompatibility between firefox and maybe my email service (AT&T) and/or facebook. The solutions AT&T offered did not take care of the problem either, hence my letter to you. I have also eliminated any unnecessary programs at start-up so I do not think there is a conflict there. Please, what kind of solution do you have now? I did your troubleshooting process in March of this year.
Thank you for your consideration in this matter, Jenifer Stabler
