I have the new version 26 on two desktops and another laptop and this option of tabs on top (or, as I prefer it, unchecked so that the tabs are on the bottom). But my new laptop, with FireFox 26 just downloaded, does not have this option - so I'm stuck with tabs on top instead of being able to put them on the bottom. Why does it show up on three other computers but not on my new laptop (Windows 7)?

I began on the Web with the NCSA Mosaic browser. I then progressed through Netscape Navigator and into Mozilla ("Mosaic killa") and the original Firefox betas. O, how I wax nostalgic for the "good old days" back before Satan discovered the Internet and decided to condemn us all to eternal damnation via the advent of tabbed browsing.

I gave tabs a chance. They only caused clutter, confusion and consumption of screen real estate. Anything that could be done in a new tab could be done much better in a new window. I've been biding my time, waiting for the majority of Web users to realize that tabs were useless and foolish, but alas, the majority of Web users are apparently... useless and foolish.

The next great crime to be committed was for the first Firefox option to change from New Window to New Tab. It took me nearly a year to overcome my habitual clicking on the first option, unintentionally opening a new tab, then having to waste time closing it and going back to carefully scroll down to the next option of New Window.

We were given SOME reprieve with the options to uncheck "Always show the tab bar" and "Open new windows in a new tab instead," but what we really needed was an option to "Open new TABS in a new WINDOW instead." Better yet, one that would say, "Completely disable tabbed browsing and remove all 'tab' options from menus and hotkeys."

Now the Apocalypse is upon us, and with Firefox 23, we are forced to have a stupid TAB at the top of our browser window. We should NOT need to use an add-on or manual code to make it go away. I have trodden the path of righteousness for as long as I could muster, but yea, I grow weary, and the Dark Side is calling me to finally click that box that says "Install Google Chrome."

As for my question.... If I were to join a dating site, should I be upfront and admit my shameful browser choice to prospective partners in my profile, or wait until we know each other better so they are more willing to accept such a flaw in my moral character?

I was using an older version of FF because the newer versions had messed up private browsing and I had the option of deciding if I wanted tabbed browsing. I switched to a newer version because a lot of sites didn't work with the older version.

I went into tools - tabs and checked what I used to use not to get tabbed browsing. Doesn't work.

Please tell me how to get rid of tabbed browsing and how to switch back and forth to private and regular browsing without opening a new tab/window.

If I can't get rid of tabbed browsing I guess I'll muddle along with an older version.

Hi

Running Firefox 71.0 (64 bit)

Well seems Firefox has been messing this up again.

Anyone have the new work around solution to get my tabs back on the bottom again. They were fine this morning then shut down and went out to lunch and when I came back they were back on the top again after months of being where I wanted them below my bookmark bar.

Thoughts on this?

Thanks Dave

I am not going to do any digging. I type way to slow. Its why i haven't transitioned to linux. Just put the option to put tabs back on the bottom. It was available for a long time, then some smart asses thought changing it "made more sense" it doesn't. I also hate that all my history and bookmarks simply disappeared into the chrome disaster firefox has become. I use palemoon because huh huh it can still put tabs on the bottom.

Simply, there is no security reason to not have tabs AVAILABLE to be on the bottom-where they belong. I would also suggest letting me clutter my screen with all the stuff that was once just a matter of how the GUI is presented and not a security issue.

I refuse to go back to Firefox because you have made it less user friendly and haven't fixed it in 5 years!

OS Windows Vista; Firefox 27.0 Suddenly, new tab has a load of big size icons and looks like a copy of MS Windows8. Definately not a look I could ever want. Loads of icons - most I have never used nor visited or visit on a rare basis. so I have no idea where they were selected from. I did not select this options. I have bookmarks and use them. I want the same blank tab to appear. No idea why a new tab should have anything other than blank. Located info to switch this off. There is no option to switch it off - only add more tabs or mess about with layout and theme. so these instructions are not correct or I have located bug of extreme annoyance.

So I attempted to change the about:config as per instructions. browser.newtab.url;about:blank however, this does not fix. I rechecked and it is set as about:blank. So I tried reopening Firefox, but when I select new tab, I still get all the advertising icons.

So what else do I need to fix in about:config to remove absolutely everything to do creating new tabs inbany other way than blank and ready for use.

RE: TABS ARE WINDOWS! The Windows bar already functions as a tab bar. Those tabs are called "windows." So, I find Firefox tab windows superfluous. How can I disable them completely from Firefox 23? I don't need what is essentially TWO windows bars covering up the entire width of my widescreen monitor's image! I already have a Windows bar at the bottom of my screen and, if I really wanted to, I could change ITS position to the top of the screen, so that it would LOOK like the Firefox tab windows bar. Firefox TABS are, essentially, a superfluous SECOND WINDOWS BAR.

Here are my reasons for why I'd rather use Mozilla's Firefox, than Microsoft's Internet Explorer or Google's Chrome. I love and admire Firefox for Mozilla's intent on good security, for Firefox's Personas add-on, and for Firefox's free use of the Ad-Block add-on which, as you know, has the distinct virtue of reducing screen clutter--the last of which is my motive for wanting to get rid of the SUPERFLUOUS Firefox tabs "windows" bar. I am dreadfully sick of companies forcing miscellaneous bars (mostly representing marketing campaigns trying to sell me something) into my browser (and down my throat) every time I download something. (In case you haven't guessed, I am deliberately referring to your Firefox tabs bar as a "Firefox tabs 'windows' bar," because TABS are WINDOWS!)

I'm using thousands of tabs, of course with the option "don't load tabs until selected" activated so FF is supposed not to have to load really more content in memory compared if I was just opening one tab.

But my Firefox is using more than 2GB of memory just to boot up i.e. loading the list of the tabs with their little icon, a tab and the extensions. I tried to boot FF in "without modules" mode it doesn't even manage to boot. That was quite annoying but OK but now my ff is randomly CRASHING (I am probably around 3000 now) ! The memory problem is here for a lot of time but the crash is new but I believe it's more the tab number than the new version responsible for it.

I cleared cache and cookies, it doesn't solve anything.

How I'm suppose to solve this problem ? Just deleting my beloved tabs ?

I believe there's a deeper problem in the way Firefox manage "this unload until selected" option because it isn't acting as if theye were not here.

My system is otherwise quite stable except my system clock can go back in time a little bit, is it a possible reason for the crashes ? Is there an 'hardcoded' limit number of tabs opened ? Shall I post on Bugzilla where no one seems to listen to anything ? Or you just consider this a 'non normal usage' and do not even care ?

Thanks to anyone helping me and sorry for any mistake in english.

PS: FF lacks a simple way of knowing how many tabs you've got.

Dear Mozilla - PLEASE put the TABS BAR at the top of each window BACK the way that it was in version 28. That means I would like to see you:

* restore the FULL DEFINITION LINES around EACH tab, not just the tab that you are currently looking at
* restore the TITLE of the tab that you are currently looking at to the TOP of the tabs bar, centered
* restore the BOLD TYPEFACE to the font-style used as the title for each tab. Enough of this dimmed typeface BS for the tab title fonts. You know what BS stands for right?
You ask the question "What do you want your Web to look like?" Well I don't think anybody really cares about what I want the Web to look like, but I would very much like YOU to care about what I want my WEB BROWSER to look like - and it's NOT what you have done with version 29.0. Gee thanks for your time. JB

(edited for language. please read Forum rules and guidelines -m)

I've always had my tabs below my address bar and I find it incredibly annoying and inefficient to have it above my address bar as well as above my bookmarks bar.

Before this update I could fix this terribly designed annoyance by painstakingly going into about:config and setting browser.tabs.onTop to false instead of for say having the OPTION to change this in settings. This was not very obvious to someone that likes OPTIONS rather than being forced to conform to bad new design decisions, but at least it worked.

With this latest update however, going into about:config and setting browser.tabs.onTop to false no longer fixes the now mucked up tabs tool bar being on top of rather than below the address bar.

Is there any other way to change this, or am I stuck with this?

I would like to make a bookmark file with all the tabs in all the open windows, organised by window. The final goal is to be able to open all Firefox windows with all their respective tabs in another browser, like Vivaldi; alternatively, to time stamp various such bookmark files, and open all the window with all their tabs I had open in Firefox, say, 8 months ago. Please have a look at the screenshot attached: it seems that the menu button Bookmarks → Bookmarks All Tabs makes bookmarks only of the tabs of the upper-most window. Thank you for any help.

I can't find an explanation to justify the removal of the 'hide tab bar' option. Can you guys explain your reasons for doing this?

There are compelling practicalities why the hide tab option was better integrated. As far as I can see demoting the option to add-on status smacks of 'policy' rather than a deep concern for usability.

I don't really care if my question annoys or inconveniences because other users have already complained about this. I'm more worried that no-one from Mozilla can be sufficiently bothered to explain why they wanted to dispose of the option, in order to limit choice and add to user frustration.
