Is (was) this happening with a specific bookmark or with any bookmark that you tries to open?

Did you left-click this bookmark?

What do you mean with "goes to Firefox index"?

Problems with bookmarks and history not working properly can be caused by a corrupted places.sqlite database file.

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database file in the Firefox profile folder.

Hello,

Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.

(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)

  • You can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
  • Or open the Help menu and click on the Restart with Add-ons Disabled... menu item while Firefox is running.

Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article for that.

To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.

When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.

Thank you.

Firefox Safe Mode worked, but rather than always doing that I referred to Troubleshoot extensions and reset Firefox. That seems to have corrected the problem. Not sure that once you have identified what might be the problem extension, how you go about removing it from your computer. Thanks for the help!

O.K., as best I can relate this is what is happening: Sometimes when I attempt to left click on a bookmark or otherwise a website on facebook or an email, then I suddenly get the following message that only remains for a few seconds: You are about to visit site 'X' with the user name "%CB%9C%16 ...... but the website does not require authentication. This may be an attempt to trick you. Is the 'X' site what you want to visit? Yes or No 'No' does not change anything. The prevailing screen is: Index of file:///C:Program Files/Mozilla Firefox/ and there are always 23 other tabs all trying to connect that prove almost impossible to close without becoming re-established. One by one I manage to get where I can close Firefox completely. Same thing happens if I return to that website.

Is this index screen appearing when you open Firefox?

You can also check the target line in the desktop shortcut to make sure that nothing is appended like a single dot (.) after the path to the Firefox program path.

more options

No, the index screen only appears when there is an attempt to open random websites along with the very brief message about the 'X" user and 23 other tabs all attempting to open. The desktop shortcut always works just fine.

Problem continues and has even happened with an attempt to post a reply here.

Given no further communication, I presume that there is no other possible solution for this problem?

So you tried EVERYTHING on this page? Even the solution you chose?

Can you see if this happens in a new profile?

Do a malware check with some malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.
Please scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.
All these programs have free versions.

Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

You can also do a check for a rootkit infection with TDSSKiller.
