Okay - for YEARS now I've used ONLY Firefox - it had the best extensions and add-ons of any other browser out there. Add to it, it was safe and very quick. So it was my default browser.

This week I logged into my DeviantArt site and odd advertisements started showing up in the lower left and right corners of the browser, unlike anything I'd ever seen before. Add to it, they were very inappropriate! So I assumed that something was wrong, and went through three, as in 3, programs to find out if I had any 'bugs' causing the problems. And of course, there was some kind of nasty bug in Firefox causing all kinds of issues.

So, following the suggestions of the fixer, plus the suggestions here, I deinstalled Firefox (21) then reinstalled the newer version, 23. At first, I thought, "Wow, that is really fast!". When I opened Firefox it didn't go to my home page, it went to the Firefox startup page, along with opening tabs for EVERY add-on and extension!

So, opened Tools, Options and reset the home page to my home page, https://www.google.com

Simple, and something I've done before. I'm a computer geek and have worked on my own additions. So, set up my home page, was working in Firefox, went to youtube to download a video and it wouldn't! So went to DLhelper, read their comments, changed one of the strings, and voila! No problems!

So I thought it was fixed and I was happy. That was last night. This morning I boot the puter and the first thing I do is open Firefox . And what happens? Oh, yes, that's right, NOTHING THAT I WOULD HAVE WANTED! It's back to the Firefox startup page, and it opens tabs for EVERY SINGLE ADD-ON!

Holy carp, getting tired now. So I research from 8 this morning until about an hour ago, so just over 5 hours I keep trying to fix it based on Firefox instructions. Go into about:config, work on the strings, change the home page info, etc. Save it. Go back to Tools, Options and there's my home page. Close Firefox and open it, and what the heck? Again, back to where it was, opening as if I just uploaded this browser. Now I've spent literally HOURS trying to fix this and I'm so frustrated that I'm just about ready to de-install it! My one complaint is that I searched all over to try and find this same problem and cannot find it. Is that true, I'm the only one with this bizarre problem???

EDIT - Now that it's fixed, I shall remove my negative comments where I can. Oddly, the final reset fixed it...

Looks like you installed an add-on which is causing at least part of your problem, if not all.
InternetHelper3.1 10.16.9.506 - it's showing in More system details
That needs to be removed from WIndows. Seems to be a virulent form of Malware.

Heres the odd thing - IVE NOT INSTALLED ANY ADD-ONS, NOTHING AT ALL!!! The only thing I did was deinstall FF 21, then install the new 23, delete all the old data, export my favs/bookmarks, then have it remove everything. I even went into regedit and took out any line that had the term Mozilla or Firefox in it!

Rebooted, ran ADW cleaner again, then ran JRT, then ran TDSS Killer, then ran SUPERAnti-spyware, and after rebooting four times I ran avast last. Cleaned up EVERYTHING!

Installed 23 again, changed home page to https://www.google.com and set it up. Closed down FF then re-opened and I'll be darned, it went back to Firefox Startup and opened up tabs for every add on.

Screen shot of it from just a few minutes ago:

Just opened up FF again, and looked at that add-on. It was disabled so I removed it. Seems to have no impact, but will reboot to see if it does.

Did you download firefox from?

Went through the instructions and did a regedit search for anything listed as InternetHelper, but found nothing. Went into cpanel, programs, no InternetHelper program listed. Just changed back my home page and rebooted, and Firefox is still acting weird every day.

Now, based on the responses from above, let's put together a list of "what Firefox users should do if they come across similar issues"  :

  • Verify that you have the latest version of FF for your computer.
  • Make certain that, if you download an updated version, you download it from Mozilla's page!!
  • Review your Add-Ons to see if you have InternetHelper loaded - if so, disable then remove it! See the info above from The-Edmeister.
  • After making sure that you have completed the steps above, follow the directions from Waka on how to Reset Firefox!!!

Now I would also suggest, if you have some bizarre ads showing up on your browser that you just don't recognize - reset Firefox, then before you open it again, run some very good versions of advanced cleaner utilities (I would suggest ADWcleaner, JRT and TDSSKiller). Once you've done this, those cleaner utilities will have found any bugs, viruses, etc., that were stuck in your add-ons and after they are completed, you can open up Firefox again and it'll run fine!!!

Waka and Edmeister - thank you for taking the time to make very good suggestions! It was like peeling an onion - it took several actions to actually fix what was wrong, the final one being the reset!!!

I frequently had this problem, which got fixed temporarily by a 'reset', and think it's connected to the fact I often put the computer into 'sleep' mode rather than shut-down. It's only a theory but since shutting-down only, I have not had the problem..... Maybe FF doesn't save the homepage prefs if the computer comes back from a 'sleep' mode? I noticed that at one point I had accumulated 122 prefs.js* in the Profile folder!

Update: I've found another culprit. I use CCleaner to clean obsolete files and registry entries, probably once a week or so. One of the settings, under 'Applications', is Firefox. I ran CC and the homepage problem re-appeared, I unchecked all the Firefox options and ran it again, and all seems OK. Could be that CC was deleting a FF preference file every time I ran it...?
