For XP users:

I have had this problem in the past. If the cleanup program did not completely delete the favorites toolbar and its contents you should be able to cursor over the toolbar area, right click, select and turn the "Bookmarks Toolbar" back on (It should have a check mark to the left of it to be "on"). If this does not work and you have not backed them up to a file they will be gone forever. If you have a backup copy you can restore it.

Left click "Bookmarks" at the top of the bar. Left click "Show All Bookmarks" (this will open up a new "Library" screen). Left click "Import and Backup". From the drop down you may be able to choose a date or a file location where you archived them. Go to one of those of your choice and left click it. You will have to confirm "OK" because it will replace all the current ones, if any.

To archive your bookmarks for future needs select "Backup" from the same drop down. This will open a new window where you can save your favorites to file, typically in a folder in "My Documents". There you will have what you need to enact a restore if future problems arise. Periodically do this backup so you don't lose many recent favorite sites.

'On another note:' I have had extensive problems with my Bookmarks Toolbar moving the icons around, deleting some of them, doubling and deleting the links within and so-on. I noticed most people on other forum pages were asking the question of how to restore them after encountering this same problem, but I never saw anyone attack the root of the "what is causing the issue". I believe I have found the problem.

The problem on my machine did not start until I synced my laptop Firefox with my Android phone Firefox. It appears that every time the two of them sync, and this would happen at random and multiple times a day, my Bookmarks toolbar on the laptop and the links within would morph. As soon as I un-synced the two the problem stopped and has not since returned.

Having to backup my bookmarks every time I added or deleted one and having to restore them multiple times a day just to use them, not to mention all the work of repairing the initial damage, is not worth having the phone synced to the laptop.

Hope this helps.

Which toolbar(s) did you lose?

Make sure that toolbars like the "Navigation Toolbar" and the "Bookmarks Toolbar" are visible:

  • Firefox > Options
  • "View > Toolbars" (press F10 to display a hidden menu bar)

Open the Customize window to set which toolbar items to display:

  • Firefox > Options > Toolbar Layout
  • View > Toolbars > Customize
  • Check that "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is on the Bookmarks Toolbar
  • If the "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is not on the Bookmarks Toolbar then drag it back from the toolbar palette in the customize window to the Bookmarks Toolbar
  • If missing items are in the toolbar palette then drag them back from the Customize window on the toolbar
  • If you do not see an item on a toolbar and in the toolbar palette then click the "Restore Default Set" button to restore the default toolbar set up
