My Firefox keeps crashing with a message "This Connection is Untrusted" even though I have reinstalled the product.

I am not entirely sure why this has been happening but I have tried to solve this issue for a while now. I am unable to log in into my email because the message "The Connection is Untrusted" does not allow me to add an exception. This has been happening to a variety of Websites, however, for some of them I was able to add an exception. More importantly (i wish i was able to include screenshots), the view of for instance this window or Facebook is altered and showed without images but only with blue-regular words. This happens repeatedly.

Re-installation of this program as well reset throughout Troubleshooting seems not to work nor does the update of the Adobe Flash Player. I have never had any problems with a great product such as Firefox but all of the sudden I am lost. I would appreciate any help from you guys because I would like to keep using this product.

Thank You,

Dave

hello dave, when you get a "this connection is untrusted" page which kind of error code is shown under technical details? please also make sure that the date & time on your system is set correctly...

It shouldn't be necessary to add an exception. Make sure that the date and time are correct on your computer.

If a web page is opened in a (i)frame then you can't set an exception.
You can try to open page in the frame in a new tab via the right-click context menu.

Check out why the site is untrusted (see the Technical details) and if this is caused by a missing intermediate certificate then see if you can install this intermediate certificate from another source.

You can retrieve the certificate and check details like who issued certificates and expiration dates of certificates.

  • Click the link at the bottom of the error page: "I Understand the Risks"

Let Firefox retrieve the certificate: "Add Exception" -> "Get Certificate".

  • Click the "View..." button and inspect the certificate and check who is the issuer.

You can see more Details like intermediate certificates that are used in the Details pane.

Try to rename the cert8.db file in the Firefox profile folder to cert8.db.old or delete the cert8.db file to remove intermediate certificates that Firefox has stored.

If that helped to solve the problem then you can remove the renamed cert8.db.old file.
Otherwise you can rename (or copy) the cert8.db.old file to cert8.db to restore the previous intermediate certificates.
Firefox will automatically store intermediate certificates when you visit websites that send such a certificate.

If that didn't help then remove or rename secmod.db (secmod.db.old) as well.

You can use this button to go to the Firefox profile folder:

It was showing an 'Error code: sec_error_expired_issuer_certificate.' However, indeed both of you were right!! It was the date (year) that seemed to be the problem! For some weird reason, it was set to a year 2035 - definitely not altered by myself though so I am not sure how that even happened.

Anyways, thank you so much guys!!

Cheers,

Dave
