can't do manual Windows 7 updates with firefox installed

I have Win 7, IE8, and Firefox installed on my computer. None of the Windows file update utilities work on my computer. I've heard it's because Windows expects IE8 to be the only browser on your computer before Windows updates will download and install. Sometime manual updates start via Control Panel, but quit at 22%. Is there a solution out there for Firefox users?
