My Firefox ver. 3.6.13 does not contain places.sqlite. How do I fix this.

I cannot make or save bookmarks in Firefox. I am told bookmarks are kept in a file call places.sqlite, but it does not exist on my computer. Why not, and how do I repair Firefox so that bookmarks are saved?
