Wouldn't tabbed browsing be a great feature?

I was running Firefox 3.5x when, without warning, clicking on a new tab had no effect. Oh, well, I thought; time to upgrade. After installing Firefox 5, the lack of tabbed browsing persists. Now when I click on a new tab the green circle spins, but no new tab opens.

Neither closing Firefox nor re-booting Windows 7 seems to have any effect.

This happened a few days ago, and then mysteriously self-corrected before becoming a problem again today.

Samsung NF310 running Windows 7 Starter.

Try the Firefox SafeMode.
A troubleshooting mode, which disables most Add-ons.
(If you're not using it, switch to the Default Theme.)

  1. You can open the Firefox 4/5/6/7 SafeMode by holding the Shft key when you use the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
  2. Or use the Help menu item, click on Restart with Add-ons Disabled... while Firefox is running.

To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before using the Firefox shortcut (without the Shft key) to open it again.

If it is good in the Firefox SafeMode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one.

You put me on the right track, for which I thank you, and the problem seems to be resolved, for which I also thank you.

The process was a bit more complicated than the support reference you provided suggested, though. When I started in safe mode I could open a new tab, so I knew that the problem, indeed, lay with an extension (as I'm pretty sure I'd never changed the theme nor installed an accelerator). But when I opened the Add-Ons manager in safe mode as directed, I could not enable the extensions one by one as suggested, for there were "disable" and "remove" buttons, but no enable button.

So, I thought, I'll load Firefox normally and then disable the icons one by one. But now the Add-ons manager would not load at all.

So ultimately I uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox--instructing that all personal and extension references be deleted as well. Unfortunately, I forgot to make a list of all installed extensions before doing so. But I have re-installed the three I really wanted, and everything still seems to be going well.

The only little inconvenience is that I had imported my bookmarks to Opera (which I tried out while my Firefox was damaged), but the instruction on re-installation to import bookmarks from Opera had no effect, and I'm now re-installing bookmarks one by one. But at least I think Firefox is working again, and thank you for your help.
