Firefox becomes non-responsive when opening new tabs and hard drive is accessed for a significant amount of time

Reformatted hard drive with Windows 7. Reinstalled Firefox 5 and now FF is slow and non-responsive. Hard drive spins consistently when a new tab is opened even before a URL is entered.

Slow to load Add Ons page as well
