For those that really need an ancient version of Firefox releases or with the latest of Firefox 3.

You might be better off running two versions of Firefox one for normal use Firefox 5, and one for the Facebook games. Surprised with all of the complaints though that fixes would not have been made for some popular games.

I see from another question that Zynga was working on 4.0, so I think I misread your question and you wanted to go back to 4.0 -- that should not be necessary and Mozilla was going to as I understand automatically upgrade extensions' maxVer from 4.* to 5.*.

You don't have to wait for extension writers or in the case between 4.0 and 5.0 for Mozilla to up the maxVersion. There is the "Add-on Compatibility Reporter " extension or you can modify your about:config

unfortunately I don't understand all this. I am computer illiterate. they should have some way for old farts to just click on a fix. everytime they upgrade it takes us old folks months to recover from it. usually I have to wait for my grandkids to come around and fix everything I've messed up.

You can install this extension to force 5.0 "compatibility" with that extension. If it was working in Firefox 4.0, it should work in 5.0.

If those extensions work, fine. If not you can use the "compatibility" button in the Add-ons Manager tab to report problems to the developer of each extension.

I am in a position of helping a friend every time there is an upgrade to Firefox. She is elderly and a distance away so it is a pain in the @$$ to have the same issue with every upgrade. She must have the Yahoo! toolbar on her screen! I also use a few toolbars which are not compatible when an upgrade it made. Now we need to go back to the Firefox 4.0 version and I cannot find where to download it again. Extremely frustrating!

I may not be as old as you, but I had problems with version 4 when it came out and Firefox offered a simple link to revert back to the 3.6.18 (which I am still using), without having to go through a bunch of hoops or uninstalling version 4 first, etc. I'd like to try Firefox 5, but I'd also like a similar, simple way to revert back to the latest version 3 if I would encounter the same problems I did when I tried Version 4. Many people offered different options, but no one addressed the basic answer to Kurtwendt's question. Does this mean that there isn't an easy way to revert back to version 3 if a person has problems with version 5?

I would rather go back to the ancient version 4 or another browser than use 5 that has disabled all extensions except the Java console. Even using the compatibility checker the extensions that used to work in 4 do not work in 5. Version 5 is of no use to me at all if nothing that you set up works. All very good to say that companies should provide version 5 browser extensions. But hey some of these extensions worked in 5 BETA why not in the 5 release version.

How do you run two versions of Firefox at once? I installed Firefox 5.0 to a different directory than the one in which Firefox 4.0 is installed. This does let me use both of them. But when I change settings in one, the settings are changed in the other one. When I run one version after running the other version, it checks all the plug-ins for compatibility, so it's acting as if I've done another install.

What do I need to reconfigure so that they run as two completely separate and independent applications, each with their own set of bookmarks, history, settings, and so on?

In response to quadbloc, use Mozilla Firefox, Portable Edition from portableapps.com. It can be 'installed' practically anywhere and each instance is entirely self-contained (the user data is stored in the application folder itself). Hence, you can install and use multiple versions of Firefox without a hitch.

The only snag is that they've removed the link to 4.0.1. You can still find it at other sites though, such as Softpedia.

Look for "Old Versions" on the right hand side and click the link to the 4.0.1 release, which refreshes the page. Then, simply click the "Download This Verson" link to get the installer for 4.0.1.

While installing it is a piece of cake, there is a tricky aspect to this which is that you should uninstall the current version of Firefox first. I'll try to explain that in as simple a fashion as I can:

1. Click the Windows 'orb' on the taskbar (a menu will pop up)
2. Where it says "Search programs and files", enter in the word: uninstall
3. Now look for the "Uninstall a program" entry, which should now be visible in the menu. Click on it.
4. A new window will pop up showing a list of programs installed on your PC. Locate the entry for Firefox then click it.
5. Click the Uninstall button a little further up.
6. Step through and conclude the uninstallation process (basically, keep clicking Next).

If you are going to refer users to a non-Mozilla source for older versions of Firefox, please use OldApps.com . OldApps also hosts an official Mozilla mirror on their website - so user's are getting an official version of Firefox, without "extras".

@the-edmesiter: Fair enough, although FileHippo is a reputable site. However, by removing the link, my instructions are effectively broken. As you have only posted a viable link for 4.0.1 which refers to a mirror dumping the user into the FTP directory structure, I would ask you to consider how the OP is supposed to make sense of it, given that he has already described himself as "computer illiterate".

EDIT: 4.0.1 is available from deleted There hardly seems any point in linking to a mirror if it only offers a version with security vulnerabilities that have since been rectified (notwithstanding that 5.0 is obviously safer).

Please do not link to a Mozilla ftp server, that is inappropriate in this forum. "Reputable" or not, that is the rules of this forum. We don't want to have to deal with "extras", like Yahoo that might be included in a version of Firefox that is downloaded from elsewhere,

You guys shouldn't force users to install a new version until it is ready to accept the add-ons,plug-ins, extensions, and toolbars we have established in our browsers. I loved using firefox but now am forced to uninstall it because all my utilities are incompatible. Think of all the advertising you are losing now. NOT SMART. Seems like you've forgotten that a browser is no better than the sum of its parts. E-mail me when you remember that.
