How do I stop a data transfer?

Since I have a dial-up connection, pages often take too long to load. Closing the tab doesn't stop the transfer; the Transmit/Receive icon still shows activity. Firefox refuses to close, that is, it disappears from the screen and taskbar but is still running in Task Manager and reappears (flashes) on the taskbar whenever one of the unwanted transfers finishes. This is especially annoying when a site tries to load lots of images. How do I get Firefox to quit, completely, when I close it? How do I get Firefox to stop all transfers when I leave the site (or close the tab)? How do I stop a data transfer without leaving the site or closing the tab (or hanging up the phone)? No, <Esc> doesn't do it.
