hangs when second window opened

Firefox starts up OK. "open new Tab" works.

Either myself (via File, etc) or a website open a 2nd window. Firefox then hangs. cannot even go to another website on current page. Close Firefox. Firefox will not open again. Via Ctrl-Alt-Del in Task Manager I delete Firefox which is still running in process tab but not application tab. Then Firefox will restart and is OK until opening a 2nd window is requested or too many tabs are open

Tools/Add-ons dialog/Extensions shows no SwitchProxy as an option to check or uncheck.

Firefox won't start if I try to run in Win98/WinME compatibility mode.
