Top 5 lines on FF web pages are TINY (98.0.2)

more options

FF 98.0.2 - just updated. Top five lines of FF are TINY - using the ZOOM function only enlarges the body of the webpage, not the top five lines, FF logo, menu bar,’ Bookmarks Toolbar, etc. All previous suggestions have been to use Zoom control or to adjust size in about:config. That is ignoring the problem. Some answers claim the problem is in system settings. However, this is a brand new out of the box computer, when I use the Microsoft Edge installed on it, the corresponding lines of that browser are functional, not microscopic, so I KNOW MOZILLA CAN DO BETTER. PLEASE DO!!! I'm not the only person going blind and crazy trying to read the top five lines and getting bad suggestions (though thank you all for trying.) I have another computer running FF 93.0 and I'm not updating that one until the latest version is fixed. Please see two pix taken at 240% zoom, both screen resolutions the same, 1366x768. It is clearly seen that the test on ver 93.0 is larger than on 98.0.2. And just for giggles, a shot of MS Edge...look at the size of the top lines. (I've done a ton of troubleshooting in my career. Something's not right.)

The laptop is running Windows 11 with a NVIDIA geoforce RTX 3060 6 GB graphics card. I have the resolution lowered to 1366x768 hoping to match an older machine for comparison (shown, FF 93.0). The display on the laptop is 3072x1920.

I have not used Windows 11 yet.

I assume you changed the resolution after noticing the problem, so that didn't cause the problem. But I don't think it's helping; Firefox seems confused.

What you would expect if you have your system set to 3072 x 1920 and you set layout.css.devPixelsPerPx to 2.5 (positive 2.5, not -2.5) would be for Firefox to behave as though your resolution is 1228 x 768, which should look very similar to your comparison system. Perhaps you already conducted that experiment and Firefox didn't upscale, but just in case you weren't aggressive enough with the value you tested, do you want to give that another try?

Hi, the browser data you shared has this interesting information that makes it look like Firefox is targeting a high resolution device such as an Apple Retina display or maybe a 4K TV:

"DisplayCount": 1, "Display0": "1366x768@60Hz : Intel(R) UHD Graphics", "HardwareStretching": "both=1 window-only=0 full-screen-only=0 none=0 error=0", "ScaledResolutionCount": 1, "ScaledResolution0": "source 1366x768, target 3072x1920"

I don't know why that is in there, or whether it is a setting you can change within Firefox.

If you go into the Windows control panel and look at the display settings, does Windows say it is connected to a higher resolution display, or is it only outputting to your laptop panel?

I don't know what else you have tried since this problem started, but if you have already tried doing a normal shutdown and restart of Windows, maybe that will trigger Firefox to reassess your display. If not, we may need to figure out where that stretching data is stored and delete it.

You can set layout.css.devPixelsPerPx to 1.0 (default is -1) on the about:config page. Adjust its value in 0.1 or 0.05 steps (1.1 to enlarge or 0.9 to reduce) until icons or text looks right. Make sure not to use values too large or too small.

  • modifying layout.css.devPixelsPerPx affects user interface and webpages (global zoom)

Firefox has a Zoom section in Settings to set the default zoom level for webpages.

  • Settings -> General -> Language and Appearance -> Zoom

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can click the button to "Accept the Risk and Continue".

Thanks for the responses. First and foremost, please, anybody, read my post. "All previous suggestions have been to use Zoom control or to adjust size in about:config. That is ignoring the problem. " This is not the problem. I tried it, it does not work. If you look at the pix, I have a Zoom setting on the line where the url goes, next to the home icon. Zooming doesn't fix the problem.

jscher2000: I shutdown the laptop completed then booted. No change in FF.

As for the Hardware Stretching information...I'm lost as to where to find this information. If things didn't look so different in Win 11 from Win 10 (or Win 7, lol) I maybe could find what you're talking about, but you *are* on the right track as to the UHD graphics and the resolution. I have been tinkering, all to no avail.

I'm tempted to give some time to MS Edge, even tho I've been loyal to FF since forever.
