How secure is it to sign in to my Firefox account on a device that is not my own?

If I sign in to my Firefox account, (like I am signed in now) on a family member's device, how secure is that? Would any of my personal information show or save on that second device? I do not sync, my info is only on my device.

Hi Jonathan, why are you interested in signing into your Firefox Account on the other device?

By default, when you sign Firefox into a Firefox Account, Sync is enabled and starts to immediately merge all of the data from your account and that device. Obviously you do not want that.

It is possible to sign into your account for a web session without signing in Firefox itself. In other words, the main menu would still have a "Sign in" button. In that scenario, Sync cannot run. This kind of web session would enable you to post on this site or on the Add-ons site, but I'm not sure that meets your needs.

Thanks for responding.

It is so I can add the kids device to my VPN account. The instructions state I have to sign in on other devices to add them. From what you write it seems as insecure as I thought it might be.

Is it the Mozilla VPN? I believe it runs independently of the browser. In other words, Firefox doesn't need to be connected to your Firefox Account, only the Mozilla VPN software needs to be connected. A user wouldn't be able to somehow bootstrap that into any other access to or use of the account, assuming it is designed properly.

Yes it is the Mozilla VPN. It's just that the kids are not as security conscious as we are and I did not want to inadvertently put my info on their device.

I'll try what you suggest.

If I understand you correctly, on their device I should not log in to Firefox, just go straight to the VPN page and log in on that page only, and it is separate from my FF account.

That makes sense.

Thanks so much.

Hi Jonathan, after you download and install, you can log out of the web session so no one can stumble into it (as you would with other websites you sign into).
