frequent crashes mostly when clicking on a link or button

Firefox is frequently crashing after having tried most of the general troubleshooting steps and crash specific troubleshooting steps as well (but not every single one). Next one to try is updating Mac OS because I am one version behind. that being said, the update takes a long time and just wanted to see if anybody can quickly identify what may be the issue before upgrading Mac OS. It seems to mostly crash when clicking on a link or button.

Please note that from the very beginning when I started using Firefox close to a year ago, I had a specific bug that has never been solved (but it never caused crashes in the past). What happens is any type of pop-up menu does not open properly and the pop-up itself "crashes" when you try and open it (e.g. auto fill pop up when you focus an input, context menu pop up, drop-down menu for various Firefox actions in the toolbar, etc.), but it does eventually open with several attempts. Would greatly appreciate any help, thank you.

Make sure you are not blocking content.

Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot(Safe) Mode {web link}

A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Troubleshoot(Safe) Mode (not Refresh). Is the problem still there?

What were you doing at the time? surfing, watching a clip, reading something . . . .


Is there a crash when using Troubleshoot(Safe) Mode?

Thank you for the response.

  • I already tried troubleshoot mode
  • the crashes are happening on many different sites, it's not site-specific
  • I already cleared cache and cookies as well.
  • Crashes seem to always happen when clicking a link or a button but have seen it crash on its own it's a few times without doing that

I'm confused regarding your second comment.

I don't think it's because I'm blocking content because like I said it attempts to open the pop-up and I see it for a split second and then it crashes, it's not like it prevents it from even trying to open. I also don't ever remember enabling a setting like that.

Let’s do a full clean re-install;

Note: Firefox comes in three or more folders on all computers. They are;

Maintenance: (Programs Folder) <Windows Only> Firefox itself: (Programs Folder) And two folders in the profile of each user on the computer for each Firefox profile for that user.

If you remove the Firefox folder, the user profiles would not be affected.


Download Firefox For All languages And Systems {web link}

Firefox ESR; Extended Support Release {web link}

Install Older Version Of Firefox {web link}


Save the file. Then Close Firefox.

Using your file browser, open the Programs Folder on your computer.

Windows: C:\Program Files C:\Program Files (x86) Note: Check Both Folders

Mac: Open the "Applications" folder. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-download-and-install-firefox-mac

Do Not remove any profile folders.

Thank you so much for the response, I didn’t want you to have to write all that and I stated above that I was on Mac OS, not sure if you saw that. I already did the reinstall a few days back which did not work.

It appears as though the crash report I provided doesn’t provide much helpful info and we're still just simply going to have to try several more different troubleshooting steps without having any confidence in which one may work, is that fair to say? If so, I may not want to continue further for right now because I was thinking the crash report may quickly pinpoint the problem.

one thing I didn't mention that I forgot to say was I noticed that the crashes start to happen right after I updated to the latest version of Firefox like a week ago.

here is the full list of what I tried:

  • Firefox refresh
  • Firefox troubleshoot mode
  • clear cache and cookies
  • restarted my computer
  • Apple diagnostics hardware test (no issues found)
  • Malwarebytes scan
  • Firefox reinstall
  • updated to latest version of Firefox

what I DIDN'T try:

  • upgrading Mac OS from Catalina to Big Sur
  • did not check if my graphics drivers are up to date

I was trying to say I didn't want you to have to write out all the steps for the other operating systems and that you must have missed how I mentioned I'm on Mac OS in the original post. It certainly wasn't intended to be any type of negative comment.

Do you have any final recommendations/comments based on the recent replies I gave? Thank you.

I show instructions for the major systems in my posts because others with different systems could have the same issue.
