Again, the dialogue failed to close when I pressed OK and, after I quit, the crash reporter appeared. The lock file was deleted.

It won't do as a solution because style sheets don't work (easily fixed) and, more to the point, addons disappear when Firefox is started again. I will begin searching for about:config settings that can be returned to default values.
