I wanted to report that an important Bookmark folder disappeared again! I had reported it before and had to start a new Question to report it again. I was able to to find it again in an Exported Bookmarks file but it wastes my times and adds to my stress level. I certainly cannot explain why it has happened.

There has been no response yet as of January 1, 2021. Two more folder bookmarks disappeared somewhere. This is very inconvenient. I would like to get it fixed soon!

If you notice you lost bookmarks or accidentally deleted bookmark(s) and you haven't closed Firefox yet then you can use "Organize -> Undo" in the bookmarks manager (Bookmarks -> Show All Bookmarks) to undo this action and restore bookmark(s) you deleted accidentally or otherwise lost/misplaced. You may have to use Undo more than once (Firefox keeps a full undo stack of changes to bookmarks for the current session). Otherwise you can consider to restore the bookmarks from a JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups folder.

  • Bookmarks -> Show All Bookmarks -> Import & Backup -> Restore

This will replace all current bookmarks and you lose bookmarks that were added since that backup was created, so you may want to create an HTML backup beforehand.

This does not help since I have added more Bookmarks and do not want the ones I added deleted. Also, the problem may not be noticed right away, perhaps a day or more later. In the past, I have found the missing Bookmarks in the current Bookmarks but it takes too much time.

1. I need to have an easy way to find the missing Bookmarks, but I understand FireFox has no such feature. 2. Most importantly, the issue should NOT occur.

It is possible that you didn't remove the folder, but merely moved it accidentally to another folder. You can check this in the Bookmarks Manager (Library). If these bookmarks are still there then the bookmarks count as shown in the filename of an automatically created backup hasn't changed.


The name of an automatically created JSON bookmarks backup in the bookmarkbackups folder includes a total item count (folders and separators included) and an hash value to prevent saving the same backup more than once. You also see this count in the Restore menu drop-down list.

The issue is not caused by accidentally moving folders. One folder that was missing interestingly reappeared in the same place where it was. One time a missing Bookmarks folder's contents was found dumped at the end of the Bookmarks folder that it was in.

I do not remember having similar issues with Internet Explorer. I do have a large number of Bookmarks but I presume this shouldn't be a problem for FireFox. Their are still folders that are missing and the issues below have not been addressed.

I am trying to find some missing Bookmarks by looking at an Exported Bookmarks file. I found two missing Bookmarks and put them back where they are supposed to be. There are two things that make the issue much harder than it should be to do.

1. The Exported Bookmark file hierarchy is shown incorrect so I cannot find the "Organizations, Misc" Bookmark. It is not in it's correct place but I don't know where it is in relation to my Bookmarks in the left pane because the hierarchy shown in the right is incorrect. (Same Bookmarks file.) See first attached screenshot.

2. The second attachment shows a Search on the "Organizations, Misc" Bookmark but the Search function does not find it! See second screenshot.
