Win 7 apps bring up “server execution failed” --after FFx 81 upgrade

Possible coincidence, but suspicious! Re: Firefox 81 [from the 100s of ‘hits’ I see here now, likely a Ffx bug]

Written from wife’s PC since mine is now crippled. I upgraded to Firefox 81 on my own PC, reluctantly, for “security” fixes, NOT for the big new feature I don’t want. Last night I downloaded v. 81 then closed Ffx and shut down the PC late at night. (It runs Win 7 with all the relevant updates I know.)

Today after booting, it showed my normal desktop. But my email app (located on D: drive) would not open either from shortcut or from Programs menu. Same for all the other apps I tried to open, even on C: drive, including ms_Office. Almost any app would bring up “server execution failed.”

Now, after a few hours on “Sleep” then reopening: --Nothing but a black screen (w/cursor) for 5-10 minutes anyway; --Later a plain blue screen, in small type on lower right: “Windows 7 build [no.] / “This copy … not genuine” –although it came installed, straight from Dell!

I hope mozilla can help cure this in its paralyzed state – and get me back to v. 80.0.1 that worked!

I think you should run the Windows repair programs.

Perform a System File Check to fix corrupted system files

Win 7, 8, 10, Vista: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/929833 Win XP: https://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/system_file_checker.mspx?mfr=true

Is the problem only with programs accessing the internet? Can you run other programs locally?

Some problems occur when your Internet security program was set to trust the previous version of Firefox, but no longer recognizes your updated version as trusted. Now how to fix the problem: To allow Firefox to connect to the Internet again;

  • Make sure your Internet security software is up-to-date (i.e. you are running the latest version).
  • Remove Firefox from your program's list of trusted or recognized programs. For detailed instructions, see

Configure firewalls so that Firefox can access the Internet. {web link}

This looks more like a Windows problem and not a specific Firefox problem, so best would be to ask advice at a Windows oriented forum.

Boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support to see if that has effect.

Thanks, Fred, for the reply with your thoughts. Again, writing from wife's PC---

My ESET internet security is up-to-date. When I first saw the non-responsive behavior, I tried running ESET, but that showed no evidence of actually starting either. All I got from a start click on any app, after a minute+ delay, was Explorer.exe popup, "Server execution failed."

The situation has gone beyond accessing programs (yes any app I tried to open would only give the same 3-word non-response from Explorer.exe after a minute or so). Now all i see on the monitor is a blank black screen with cursor, and after moving the cursor, maybe 5-10 min later, it goes to plain blue with the bottom corner words re Win 7.

In this state I'm leery of even trying a reboot, not knowing what evil might get set in the system. So I've just left it running with the monitor off and ethernet disconnected.

BTW when I searched Firefox help for "Firefox 8" plus "Server execution failed" it showed over 900 hits; but how to find any one of them is baffling. Best way to find?? Has no one else encountered such a problem after Ffx 81? (For now, I tell my wife not to close her ffx 80, lest 81 install. She keeps it on sleep overnight.)

As for windows forums, I did get a few hits on MS support or sevenforums but they are years old and rather technical about possible registry fixes or a big 5-part MS patch (2016?), "could cause problems", and probably inaccessible now. That's when I decided to see if FFx users have seen such a result after update to 81.

Any knowledgeable clues greatly appreciated. --David

Do a malware check with several malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.

Please scan with all programs because each program detects different malware. All these programs have free versions.

Make sure you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

You can also do a check for a rootkit infection with TDSSKiller.
